Weather in New Mexico - by Aimée Thurlo

As some of you may have heard, we've been hit by the most incredible storms. Last night (today's Saturday) we had gale force winds.... Stuff was flying everywhere, but all things considered, I think I'll let the US Weather Service tell the story.

 From the weather service....

What made Friday evening's severe storm even more remarkable was the fact that 16-18 hours earlier, a cluster of intense thunderstorms produced very heavy rain, flash flooding, and widespread power outages over many of the same areas in the city. Rainfall totals between the two impressive events totaled 4-5 inches. The spectacular picture here, courtesy of Don Armstrong, is a 6-second exposure from early Friday morning.

For those of you who wondered about tonight...
Albuquerque experienced one the most intense, severe wind-producing thunderstorms in recent memory if not on record. AVOID TRAVEL IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. Trees and power lines are down throughout the city, and the FLASH FLOOD THREAT is serious.

The 89 mph gust measured at the Albuquerque Sunport at 7:36pm Friday, July 26th is the strongest gust recorded at the ‪#‎ABQ‬ Sunport since 1939.

Clean up here is ongoing. As I write this, our phone line is hanging by a thread. That's why I want to put this up on Google so it'll post automatically in case we're off line.

It's been scary, but we're all right and that's all that matters.  A tiny leak in the roof (considering the wind, that's a miracle) lots of downed tree limbs, but nothing that can't be repaired. And we learned a few things - never stop stocking lanterns with LEDs, little flashlights don't work well enough, if you buy ice cream and the power goes out, grab a spoon. It's God's way of saying 'smile.'

  1. Aimee and David, so glad you are okay. Wow, what a mess! You are in my thoughts.

    1. The clean up part seems never ending. The good part is that David got up on the roof and rigged the phone line so it stays up. It works, although they'll still have to come tomorrow to fix it. Our fix was just a way to keep a phone line open (and our internet).

    1. I wish the clean up was easier. ugh. Branches everywhere. On the good side we're thinking of it as firewood for the winter. :-)

  3. Aimee, We had one of those freak storms last week. On a day when the weather forecasters said we wouldn't have any monsoon activity. And the storm went in bands. My sister lives less than a mile away from me. She had a river down her street and it blew part of her fence down. She was without power. I got minimal rain and not the intense wind. The weather this year is weird. But I love to watch the lightning storms. Glad you all survived. I suspect our summer storms aren't over yet.

  4. Aimee and David - Thank God you're okay and that all you've sustained is a leak in the roof! Are you plotting a book with weather so strong it's a character? And I love your resolution to the loss of power problem as it relates to ice cream. I often do preventative ice cream management.
    Take care!

    1. Muriel, I'm a great believer in the power of ice cream. LOL. We need to fix the leak in the roof, but it's going to rain again today and it's got to be dry before anyone can go up there. Oh well, I've got a large horse tub I'm putting beneath it. It'll hold.

  5. We're in for another tonight, Roz. Injured my idiot rib cage moving some stuff. It hurts like mad, but only when I inhale. :-)

  6. Gosh! Incredible pictures and weather. I'm glad you're okay overall, but I know you must be stressed with all that's going on...clean-up, roof etc... Be careful with that injury!! We had severe storms in our area earlier this year. I injured my knee moving things after a basement flood and it has taken about 6 months for it to heal at 90%. Both of you take care!

  7. Thanks Rula. We came in for lunch and I've got to say I'm pooped. What really gets me is that it could be so danged horrible for several hours then just fine. Nature is certainly unpredictable.

  8. Those pictures are beautiful and terrifying! I actually love thunderstorms since going on a camping trip and spending the night as a CIT comforting my smaller campers while we watched lightning crash around our lean to. It was such an exhilarating feeling- yet when I watch the news and see the real devastation, I understand that it isn't a thrill- it is life changing and tragic for so many. My heart goes out to anyone- from losing a long loved tree to losing a home to losing a loved one. Mother nature has a way of making us hold tight and appreciate the things we still have... even if it is only a melting pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream :) Stay safe Aimee and David!

    1. Karen, what never ceases to amaze is how calm things were just hours after that horrific storm. It's like nature spent it's anger then relaxed and took a breath. They're saying to get ready for another blast this weekend. ugh. But I've got to ask. what's a CIT?
