Where is Spring? by Amy Vastine

Mother Nature almost had me fooled the other day. Last Friday and Saturday it was in the 70's and 80's here in Chicago. We were loving it. The kids had their shorts on. I was ready to take all the winter coats to the dry cleaners to get an end of the season cleaning before they go into storage. We even bought some new ceiling fans for the bedrooms because pretty soon we're going to need them!

Then this happened.
Yep. That's the view out my back door Monday afternoon. And yes, that's more darn snow. I've decided I am soooo done with winter weather that I could scream.

I've also decided to blame America's love of the movie Frozen. All the little girls of the world can't get enough of it and it must be creating this polar vortex nightmare I can't quite escape from! Okay, okay, that might be a little bit of crazy talk, but can you blame me? I have two inches of snow on my deck in the middle of April!

My husband is using this as an opportunity to lure me to another state, one without the extreme weather of the midwest. He would like to move to North Carolina or somewhere further south. I haven't been on board with this plan due to my job here and my family being in the area. But this snow is beginning to sway me.

I say forget North Carolina - I'm ready to move to Hawaii. I'd still be a citizen of the US, but I would live on a beautiful island where it never snows in April!  Where is your dream place to live? If you could pack up today and go anywhere (money is no object because this is just for fun), where would you go?

  1. Oh, Amy, you had me laughing. Of all the cartoons Mike and I saw this last year, Frozen was the best. And, my son, who says no Princess movies, loved it too. Not as much as he loved the Lego movie or the Nut Job, but he sat mesmerized. I won't tell you about the weather here in Arizona (hot) or that we're going swimming Saturday. hehehehe

My dream spot is in the snow. I want to live in South Dakota, or back in Nebraska.

    1. I love that your son loved that movie. So did my 9 year old until all the girls in his class sang the song EVERY day at school. Now, he's not a fan. And thank you from sparing me the weather report from AZ. Although a childhood friend commented that it was 82 yesterday in Phoenix on Monday when I posted this same picture on my Facebook. Nice. I'm jealous.

  2. Good. LORD you all are getting dumped on this year. I have to say I'm pushing for your husbands idea *wink wink* b/c Hawaii is TOO FAR AWAY. I'd have to choose Savannah or South Carolina - somewhere it cools off a bit but you know, not TOO much. ;) Hang in there woman! And if it's still snowing in June - you need to get outta dodge pronto!

    1. I guess I could convince my parents to stay in Florida all year round and then I could move there too! I will leave if we get any snow in May or June. xoxo

  3. Amy...I would laugh too if I didn't feel so bad for you. Okay, maybe I did laugh a little....but as mentioned above I think June should definitely be your cutoff! My husband and I traveled to New Zealand a few years ago and I've dreamed of living there ever since--you said money was no object, right?

    1. Oh, New Zealand! I want to visit there someday for sure. I won't hold it against you that you laughed. Gotta laugh or I'm gonna cry!

  4. Amy, your photo looks like the one my daughter sent me yesterday from their back deck. They live in Grand Rapids, MI. She feels like you do. I just don't tell them that we've basked in high 80's low 90's for a couple of weeks. And I guess I'm living in my dream place, because we chose AZ and I love, love the sunshine and heat. I've lived in Hawaii too, but I have to say I like the dry heat of the southwest more.

    1. You and Pam have it pretty good! My grandparents were in Mesa for years. I loved visiting. I wouldn't complain about living there either!

  5. Amy-I'm coming with you! We just got back from Maui on Sunday and yep-snowed here on Monday! Not to sound unpatriotic (I love Canada) but I'd become a US citizen in half a heartbeat. The US is soooo much cooler and warmer temperature-wise.

    1. I am so jealous of you, Jen! I love Maui, it was the best vacation I've ever taken. And we would welcome you in the US anytime!

    1. Thank you for not complaining! My kids and I have decided none of us will complain about the heat this summer. We welcome it!!

  7. I loved living in Maine, but if money were no object and I could see family and friends whenever I wanted, St. Andrews, Scotland is perfect!

    1. That sounds like somewhere I need to look up! I have family in Brussels, Belgium. They have travelled all over Europe. I know they've been to Scotland but not sure if they were in St. Andrew. I'm gonna have to ask!

  8. Amy - sorry about the snow, but I LOVE the view out your back door - the beautiful patio furniture, those gorgeous trees. But I'm sure you're dreaming of sitting out there with a good book and an iced tea - or a margarita. If I could be anywhere, I'm torn between Paris and wherever that is that EMMA takes place.

    1. The trees behind my house are the BEST. When they have leaves, that is. I have a wonderful view. I love being on the deck spring-fall but the winter is a pain!! My husband has been to Paris a couple times and says he has to take me because he thought it was amazing. I hope to go someday!

  9. Hi Amy!! I'm familiar with that sort of weather being originally from N.Y.C. I don't miss it. As I've aged the cold just goes right to my bones. I love N.C. for the weather although we're dying here now from allergies because EVERYTHING is blooming!! I guess nowhere is perfect, but I've heard that Germany is beautiful. Perhaps I'd like to try living there?

    1. Hi Laurie! I can't wait for things to bloom around here. I haven't been to Germany, but I was close - I've been to Switzerland. But my husband has been all over Germany for work and really loves it. Lots of beer and sausage - he's in heaven when he's there!

  10. I hear ya, Amy! We went from an unseasonably warm 75 back to a freeze warning a few days ago. I love living where we have 4 seasons, but this has been a wacky winter!
