Have Laptop Will Travel

On Friday, I went to work.  This week has been a hodgepodge of adjusting life so that life could happen.  How do I translate that?  Well, we're remodeling a 1970's kitchen that still had Montgomery Ward appliances, and quite honestly, I've not had a sink in two weeks.

Two weeks!

We've been eating out or doing take-out for two weeks.

I'm ready to cook!

"Who said that?"

Really, me, I'm ready to cook.  I managed to write 500 words.

Friday night was spent buying my husband his birthday present.  Because he's doing most of the remodel, he wanted a table saw.  Here you see he and our son playing on the Sears' lawn mowers.  Hubby wishes we had a lawn big enough to warrant a riding mower.

We don't.

Saturday morning, I gave a talk at the main library. I took my laptop so I could find time to write. I promoted the tar out of my November release Holiday Homecoming.  I also handed out a flier promoting the anthology I'm in.  If you pre-order Mistletoe Kisses during the month of November, it's only 99 cents.

The minute I finished, I hurried home and packed so we could head to Legoland.  We checked into the hotel and I opened laptop and started writing.  Sunday morning, we hit the park.  Here is my nine-year-old.  I think he's in love.

After the park closed, we had dinner with family and back to our room.  Hubby watched tv.  Son built a lego.  Me, I wrote.  It's what I do.

The one thing I didn't realize about being a published authors was how true the say:  Have Laptop Will Travel

I guess I should have realized it during my honeymoon when I was writing the final chapter to a book that was due.

So, how about you?  Where does your laptop travel?

Pamela Tracy's November release Holiday Homecoming is available now at eHarlequin.

  1. Pamela, So excited for you and your new kitchen! I take my laptop everywhere, too. Sometimes I am so inspired to be writing in a different location and sometimes....well, it doesn't work out quite like I imagine. But it's always such a treat when I end up with more words than I anticipated.

    1. Carol, I agree. My favorite place to go is the public library. I practically live there a week before the book is due.

  2. Pam, I went through a kitchen remodel that went 3 weeks over the date they gave us. I feel for you. And the feeling that you really want to quit eating out is a vague memory still. I'm glad you're getting all new stuff--when it's done it's wonderful.
Would you believe I've never had a laptop. I keep looking at them, and not deciding which one to get. I love your cover with the dog and Christmas tree. Can't wait to read the book.

    1. Roz, I have fine white dust all over the house. All over. Everywhere. But I will be so happy when it's done. I have a Mac Pro. Best investment I've made. Works like a charm.

  3. I take my laptop with me - in a large container made to protect groceries from the heat - on an IKEA metal carrier. Thought getting a large laptop would service me best, but it's way too heavy.

    1. Marion, I made that mistake last time. Plus, the thing never worked right. Acera is the main reason I became a Mac person. Never worked right, and when I took it back to Best Buy. They really didn't care. At the Mac store, I get service with a smile.

  4. Pam - I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You're so heroic! As a woman still living in a 1906 kitchen, I'm so jealous! (The appliances are newer, of course, but the set up is the same - and made for Pygmies! You know it's got to be bad if I'm complaining at 5'2".) Never had a laptop until this reboot of the career two years ago. And, like Marion, I got the wide one. The way my life is now, I don't go anywhere anyway so as long as the laptop can make it to the front porch in the summer, I'm good. Congratulations on the book! Love the Husky!

  5. So glad you're ready to cook! I've taken my laptop to Hawaii and written on my alphasmart on long car rides (so durable).

    1. I have a Dana, but it is getting pretty dusty as I don't use it much. Hawaii is on my bucket list.

  6. Well I'm not a writer and don't own a laptop yet but I do take my Kindle Fire with me almost everywhere.

    1. Linda, I love the large print and the lit background. I can even read it in the car. Print books make me sick in the car.

    2. I know what you mean. I think I've become a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" addict! On a recent trip to Texas I left the laptop home--which was very, very unusual!

  7. Feeling for you since I went though half of my house being renovated last year. Ten pounds and 2 months. Of course I've gained the 10 pounds back. lol. Like you, my laptop goes everywhere...it's just hard for me to focus when I'm away from home...Got to learn how to do that!

  8. LOL, at home everybody needs something :)
I don't remember what focus is. I'm looking forward to its return.

  9. My laptop goes everywhere with me. As a matter of fact, when we went to Mackinac and the UP in September, half of Duane's clothes stayed home, but the laptop was right in its spot in the back seat. I love writing away from home as long as there's a comfortable spot (I love hotel dining rooms). I don't want to talk about remodeling--I think I have a permanent twitch at just the thought of that white dust--but my heart is with you!

    1. LOL, we were in Telluride this past summer, and I at 4 in the morning until 6 would sit in the lobby at an old desk. I got a lot done, amidst answering hotel questions.

  10. I still shudder at the word renovation. Last winter and spring projects are too fresh in my mind. Yay for your new kitchen-- almost done. I'm with you. I have a MacBook Pro that I love. Became a convert last year. Now my dh complains about Windows and his PC all the time and I just smile. When traveling I tend to rely on my tablet, which is lighter--unless I'm on deadline which I am right now. Have chained myself to my desk! :)

  11. Seems like the kitchen is coming along! I can't believe you have been living without a working kitchen for so long. Hopefully it will all be worth it in the end :)
As for my laptop - where doesn't it travel would be a better question. My friends and I take a girls weekend every January to the spa. While the other ladies get massages and facials, I enjoy the peace and quiet of the suite to get tons of writing done! It may be a working vacation but considering that my house is NEVER quiet, it is a complete escape!

  12. Oh, I would love to do that. Yesterday Mike and Don did the morning at Legoland without me. I wrote. I joined them just after noon and played all afternoon.
