Something's Wrong!

Even I can appreciate this weeping cherry tree!
Can  you believe it’s April? I’m an oddball who gets a little blue in constant sunshine, and I’m downright cranky in the heat of summer (and, actually, spring, too). I love that my corner of the world is such a verdant shade of green right now, but I love the orange and red and yellow of autumn even more. I’m already counting down. One of my favorite days in the year comes in late-ish June. The summer solstice gives me hope that the heat will eventually fade a little.

This spring is a little easier because I’ll soon be doing revisions on a Scrooge-themed story that will come out in October’s Heartwarming lineup. I also need to write a Thanksgiving novella, and Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite day. After that, another holiday novella. So—through the months of heat and sun that literally sucks the life out of me, I’ll be writing about cool days and crisp nights, snow and family and holiday excitement.
Everyone around me is pretty excited about blooming flowers and greening trees and rising temps, so I need a little lifeline—pretending this part of the year is actually another fall and winter, by writing stories about my favorite seasons.

The funny thing is—I wish I were different. I’d love to be like everyone else, seeing renewal in this time of year, but I’m about to start hopping from shade to shade, swimming early in the morning or late at night, to avoid that sun. Writers often swim against the stream because we’re a strange mix of introversion and “Look—I wrote a book. I hope you’ll like it!” But this time of year, I feel as if I’m the only soul in this hemisphere yearning to escape spring. Probably because I am.

This is probably the quirkiest thing about me, and I really would change it because I'd love to embrace a 4th of July picnic, or a summer concert under the sun. What’s one thing you’d change about yourself?

I’d love to send a copy of Now She’s Back to someone who has a quirk to share in the comments. Hope you’re already enjoying a fabulous spring! (And I’ll try not to over-envy anyone who got to celebrate the change of seasons with unexpected snow!)

  1. " we’re a strange mix of introversion and “Look—I wrote a book. I hope you’ll like it!” LOL! That's so very true! I'm someone who is looking forward to some summer. But I love winter, too. Winter is perfect writing time--cozy inside, miserable outside.

    1. Patricia, it is so funny, isn't it--how do we live inside ourselves? But congrats on being one of the lucky ones who loves this time of year! My husband sees winter the same way you do--miserable outside! :-)

    1. Hey, Loree! I'm so glad I have fellow quirkies to hang with! :-) Isn't that tree amazing? It's like pale pink lace! Hope you're having a wonderful week, too, and thank you so much for stopping in to chat!

  3. Anna, Your Scrooge-themed story sounds so fun! I happen to be one of those spring lovers. The sun makes me happy and gives me energy! I do know a couple people like you who wouldn't mind living in the Arctic(: I have a friend who gets migraines and the sun/heat is a trigger for her. She takes great pains to avoid getting over-heated.

    1. Carol, thanks for stopping by! I'm actually looking forward to revisions on the Scroogey story. :-) My family is like you--the sun and all the new life in spring especially gives my daughter such lovely happiness. But I'm off to the Arctic! :-) I have one other friend who feels the same. Along about August, we're writing each other hopeful messages to get through the next couple of months! :-) I hope spring is treating you well!

  4. Hi, Anna, Although autumn is my favorite season, I must admit that, after the wettest October to March on record here in PacNW, I'm looking forward to summer and sunshine.

  5. I enjoy autumn, too, but I have to admit I love warmth and sunshine. We had snow two nights in a row. This morning we woke up to nearly 10 cm of accumulation. I'm happy to send the snow your way, Anna! :-)

  6. We love you just the way you are, Anna. :) The quirkiest thing about me is, I have no fingerprints.
As for the seasons, since I freeze when it's 75 degrees...I love the heat!

  7. I'm a summer person, too. I'm glad you like winter, Anna. I know it comes for several reasons so I tolerate it. Not well, but hey that probably says I have some quirks too. Who said they were cold at 75? Me, too. I wear jackets until it hits 90.

  8. Oh, Wow Jill...no fingerprints...I may use you in my next romantic suspense!

I like all the season as long as it doesn't rain and the wind doesn't blow. lol. But I'm happiest when it's 75 and sunshiny!

  9. I have a love/hate relationship with Spring and Summer Anna. Although I love the beautiful trees budding and the flowers blooming, the allergies make me miserable. Although I love the longer days in Summer, I can't take the extreme temperatures. The sun zaps my energy and I do whatever I can to stay out of it.
A quirky thing about me is I break out from exposure to the sun, and if it's too humid I'll pass out. But I like Jill's having no fingerprints better. ( :

  10. Fall was my favorite season growing up in West Texas, but now that we live in Alaska it's summer for sure. Of course summer means highs in the sixties, maybe seventies. If it pokes near eighty for a day or two, we all drag around and complain about the heat. But we love the long days.

  11. I live in South Florida and summer here lasts the majority of the year. I absolutely hate the heat and humidity. The temps are already on the rise here and I dread having to go outside some days, even if it's just to walk down the driveway to get the mail. Yet the quirky thing is I dream about living at the beach some day.

  12. I love spring and cannot wait for it to get here. I do wish it wouldn't toy with my emotions like it did this weekend. We had snow storms every twenty minutes on Saturday. It would snow like a blizzard and then the sun would come out and all the snow would melt. Twenty minutes later, snow again. Repeat all day long. It was soooo weird!!
