FUN FATHER’S DAY TRIVIA AND RECIPES! | We Talk to Ourselves...A Lot!
by Loree Lough and Cerella Sechrist
Father's Day Trivia: For starters, it’s an old holiday that dates back some 4,000 years ago, when a boy named Elmesu carved “Good health and a long life” to his Babylonian dad…on a card made of clay.
Most of us are most familiar with the not-so-secret competition between Anna Jarvis—inspired by a rousing sermon to promote an official, annual Mother’s Day celebration—and Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, who thought “What’s good for the moms should be good for the dads!” Dodd pushed and prodded until she gained the support of Spokane, Washington’s YMCA helped put its first Father’s Day celebration on the calendar on June, 19, 1910.
Not to be outdone, several presidents lent their support to the festivities. Woodrow Wilson approved the idea in 1916, followed by Calvin Coolidge in 1924, Lyndon Johnson—who signed a proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as “Father’s Day” across the U.S., underscored in 1972 by Richard Nixon, who established a permanent national observance of the day. Sonora Dodd was honored for her inspiration and contribution at the 1974 World’s Fair in Spokane—at the age of 94.
What’s the most popular Father’s Day gift? You guessed it: TIES! Coil one into a rosette, and you’ve given two gifts in one, because the rose is the official Dad flower.
If you haven’t repeated this famous Mark Twain ‘papa’ quote, you’ll no doubt recognize it: “When I was a boy of 14, I thought my father was so ignorant, I could barely stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in 7 years!”
What would a Cerella and Loree blog post be without a couple of family-tested, dad-pleasing recipes? The ones below feature single dads from our stories - Noah Preston from Saving Alyssa in Loree's "A Child to Love" trilogy and Connor Callahan from Harper's Wish in Cerella's "Findlay Roads" series.
Make sure you read past the recipes and to the end of the post to find out how to win a $50 Amazon gift card!
We’d love to help you make your guy’s Father’s Day super-special with a $50 Amazon e-card, awarded to one lucky visitor who comments below.
Just wait until you see what we have lined up for you next month! (Hint: Think fireworks, parades, and back yard barbecues!)

As you know, I love reading your posts, Loree and Cerella. Not only did I enjoy this post, I found it educational, as I had no idea about the genesis of Father's Day. I must have read the Mark Twain quote somewhere along the way, but I'd forgotten it, so thank you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteAnd on the topic of sharing...your recipes are always so tempting!
Loree, congratulations for all the wonderful reviews for THE FIREFIGHTER'S REFRAIN!
Thanks, Kate, and here's hoping you'll give into temptation (because that Mancake Pancake recipe is one of my personal favorites)! Wishing you a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend!
DeleteThanks, Kate! We always appreciate you sharing our posts! :)
DeleteThanks, Kate, and here's hoping you'll give into temptation (because that Mancake Pancake recipe is one of my personal favorites)! Wishing you a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks for educating us on how Dad's Day began. Interesting that it was pushed to the forefront by women. And ladies, I'm in awe of all your writing talent and you cook, as well? You always give us such great recipes. Will look forward to July for sure.
ReplyDeleteYup, score another one for 'the women behind the men'! Have a great weekend, dear Roz!
DeleteAw, thanks, Roz! But I think I like to eat more than I like to cook! ;)
DeleteI really had no idea that Father's Day (as an official holiday) was so recent! I'm just glad my dad doesn't like to wear ties, otherwise I'd be buying him ties every Father's Day! (Though I might get him a Star Wars tie just for fun.)
ReplyDeleteConfession: I've never bought a Father's Day tie for any man in my life! LOL Hope you have a beautiful weekend, Angela!
DeleteHi Angela! I have to admit, Loree did a lot of the research on this post, and I found it interesting, as well! A Star Wars tie sounds like a good gift. :D
DeleteHappy Father's Day to all the great dad's!
ReplyDeleteWe second that wish! Enjoy your weekend, Melanie!
DeleteAgreed, Melanie! Have a great weekend!
DeleteInteresting! Love the Father's Day facts. I think I saw my dad in a tie maybe three times in his life. I usually bought him tools or fishing tackle. These recipes sound amazing.
ReplyDeleteLoree - I made your lasagna soup recipe for a family gathering a couple weeks ago. So delicious! Everyone raved about it and I raved about you(;
So happy to hear the soup was a hit at your house, too! It's one of those recipes that seems to satisfy even the most discriminating eaters (which is only one of the reasons I make it so often)! I'm with you on the gifts for Dad: tools, sporting equipment, books, even gift cards to a favorite restaurant. But ties? Nope! LOL Have a lovely weekend, Carol!
DeleteThe men in my life would love those mancakes, but I doubt the bacon will make it to the mancakes if they are in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win!
I hear ya, Glenda! That's the very reason I always make a double batch of bacon when I make the Mancakes! LOL Good luck in the drawing, dear lady, and have a fantastic weekend!
DeleteLOL, the back problem seems to be universal where men are concerned! My pugs go crazy when I'm cooking bacon. They can smell the good stuff!
DeleteLove those recipes! And thanks for the information on Father's Day. Competition between Mother's Day and Father's Day. I like that.
ReplyDeleteI thought the competition thing was pretty cool, too, Pat! You have a great weekend!
DeleteAgreed, Patricia! I didn't know about that until Loree shared her research!
DeleteI never knew how fathers day came to be, that is pretty cool. I can't wait to share my new random fun facts with mommy. ~ Stevie
ReplyDeleteTell your mom hello for me, and give her a big hug! Have a beautiful weekend, Stevie, and try to get some rest!
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the trivia, Stevie! Have a great weekend!
DeleteLove that Mark Twain quote, and I must try those "mancakes"!
ReplyDeleteYou'll love the Mancakes, Annie! Good luck in the drawing and have a great weekend!
DeleteMancakes is such a perfect name for them, isn't it, Amie? ;)
DeleteHi, Guys! Like Angela, I had no idea Father's Day only became official so recently. My dad wore ties to church, but for Father's Day we bought him Spanish peanuts and chocolate caramels. I make pancakes with bacon in them, but not that wonderful-sounding candied bacon. Have to give that a shot. Ron would love it. Always such fun 'hearing' from you two! Happy Weekend, Everyone.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling your dad liked the candy and peanuts far more than a tie...I know I certainly would! Speaking of candy...you'll love the candied bacon! Have a beautiful weekend, Muriel!
DeleteI tried a bacon and chocolate candy bar awhile back, and it was delicious. Just sayin'. ;)
DeleteI never knew that's how Dad's day had started, TY for sharing. And thank you for the recipies....now I have some new ones to try out but I will need to gather some of my family members together as it sounds like you need a little bigger crowd for those recipies but hey....that's an excuse for a party, right?!
ReplyDeleteYou should see my stack of "try this recipe," Tressia! If I keep adding to it, it'll take until 2020 to test them all! You can 'halve' the recipes and they'll turn out just as well. But I'm with you: PAR-TAY! Have a great weekend, m'friend!
DeleteI have a feeling that even with a bigger recipe, there won't be too many leftovers with these recipes, Tresisa! Enjoy! :)
DeleteSuch a brilliant quote from Mark Twain. I had no idea the original father's day happened 4000 thousand years ago, and with a card made out of clay, that's some pretty crafty DIY.
ReplyDeleteOh, I agree, Summer! And wouldn't it have been great to SEE that card! Have a terrific weekend!
Deletelol! Great way to look at it, Summer. If they'd had Pinterest back then, I'm sure the clay card would have ended up pinned there! ;)
DeleteLoree, I enjoyed your presentation at last year's Writing to Inspire conference at the Tea Room in Gambrills!
ReplyDeleteLoree is awesome, Tawn, isn't she??
DeleteWell hey there, Tawn! Good to see you here and glad you enjoyed that li'l speechie thingie! Are you going to the Writing to Inspire event this year? I hear it's jam-packed with great presentations and talented authors/speakers! Hope your weekend is terrific!
DeleteThis is so cool! I never knew where Father's Day originated from. Thank you for the recipes too! I love apples with most anything but especially caramel sauce. YUM! Great post, Loree and Cerella! Hope you two have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Stephanie! Apples and caramel are such a perfect pairing, too, I think. I hope you enjoy the recipes and have a great weekend!!
DeleteIf you test those recipes on your family, Stephanie, I hope you'll let us know how much they enjoyed them! Thanks for the weekend wishes, and here's to a great one for you and yours, too!
DeleteI never heard about that Father's day card 4000 years ago. That's pretty cool. I'm excited to try out the recipes. If y'all keep this up, you may turn me into a cook after all!
ReplyDeleteI keep my cooking simple, LeAnne, and I think Loree does the same so the recipes we share aren't too complicated to pull off! :) I hadn't heard about the Father's Day card until Loree told me - you're better informed than I am!
DeleteI agree with Cerella: simple is always better (and less expensive)! LOL Here's hoping your week got off to a terrific start! And stay tuned, because at noon, I'm going to announce the winner of the $50 Amazon egift card!
DeleteThank you, ladies, for sharing the fascinating trivia and yummy recipes! What a great way to kick off the weekend!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Britney! The Mancakes are a perfect Saturday morning breakfast!
DeleteI'll share a little secret with you, Britney: Mancakes can be frozen for up to a month and reheated...just a minute in the microwave! They're not QUITE as moist and tender, but on a busy weekend morning, they'll do! Come back soon to find out who won the $50 Amazon egift card!
DeleteInteresting history behind Father's Day, ladies. Thank you both for sharing this research with us, but even more importantly---those recipes. YUM! Thank God I'm on my way to the grocery this morning. I love to experiment on my dinner guests and I have a table full of guinea pigs tonight!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I hope your guests enjoy your experiments, Catherine! ;) Have a great weekend!
DeleteIt was interesting to learn how Father's day started. The recipes sound delicious to me. My dad was the breakfast maker on the weekends when we were kids. He always made the greatest French toast and his pancakes were delicious. I have four sisters and I can tell you the man had so many ties back in the day, they are probably still stuffed away somewhere lol
ReplyDeleteDarlene, it sounds like your family has some wonderful memories!! I bet your dad would be a pro at making the Mancakes recipe. And probably looks pretty dapper in those ties. ;)
DeleteNot long ago, Larry and I went through his collection of ties, and donated all but a dozen or so. (He doesn't wear them often now that he's semi-retired. ) Wasn't easy for him to decide which were his favorites! French toast is one of my all-time favorites. I can almost smell 'em, steaming on the griddle, now! Come back soon to find out which commenter won the $50 Amazon egift card!
DeleteThis Father's Day history is very interesting, Loree. TY for the recipes and a chance to win. :)
ReplyDeleteLoree is always full of fun trivia, isn't she, Kd? Hope you enjoy the recipes!
DeleteI'm great at trivia...unless I'm playing that game! LOL Hope your family will enjoy the recipes as much as mine has, Kd! Tune in soon to see who was the lucky winner of the $50 Amazon egift card!
DeleteYou two are a lot of fun. Thanks for the history lesson and the recipes. As soon as I see bacon, I know it's a winner.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you think, MsElle3 - bacon makes any recipe better! ;)
DeleteCerella is right, MsElle3...if bacon is involved, it's gotta be good! Hope you'll return soon to find out which lucky commenter won the $50 Amazon egift card! Enjoy your Tuesday!
DeleteMy apologies! Yesterday, I was supposed to announce the winner of the prize Cerella and I offered to one lucky commenter right here. Fortunately, my forgetfulness gave a few more of you a chance to comment, and we added your names to our trusty winners hat. So, without further ado, Cerella and I are tickled pink to announce the lucky winner...Angela Kinder! Send your email address to me via Facebook private message, Angela, and we'll arrange delivery of your prize. Congratulations, and we hope you'll enjoy it!
