June...

I love June for one reason. On Monday, June 20th, the summer solstice arrives, and the days begin to shorten. I know that's not normal because most people embrace summer, while I hide from the sunlight and pray for rain and unseasonable temps!

This June (and late May) have already been strange. I've replaced a phone and a laptop, both having unexpectedly given up their lives as if they no longer enjoyed my company. I also had to ask my husband to Gorilla Glue my Fitbit because I apparently have toxic sweat that made the sides of the screen come loose. (In case you find yourself in need of such a fix, Gorilla Glue is a miracle!)

Consolation for Living in This Heat
So--here I am surly about having to buy my favorite things--new gadgetry. I blame my crankiness on the 90-plus degree temps we've been enduring. The good news--the pool went from too cold to bathwater overnight. The bad news--this soul-sucking heat makes me just a little irrational.

So--I'm doing what any sane writer would do under such duress. I'm writing a holiday novella, and I just finished revisions on my next Heartwarming novel, A Christmas Miracle, due out in October.

I'm sure I'll come back before then to talk more about my newest addition to the Smoky Mountain series, but I'd love to hear what you're looking forward to this summer. I know there are good things coming, but this heat makes me nuttier than Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men!

  1. You're not alone...I hate summer too. And in Colorado, that means we went from too-cold-to-leave-the-window-open-at-night in May, to I-think-it's-time-to-bring-in-the-AC-unit in June. My bedroom (with fans and open windows at night) is staying consistently around 77 to 79 degrees, and I feel like I can't breathe. Or sleep.

    1. Heidi, I definitely share your pain. When the folks around me say "It's a beautiful day," I often have no other response than to stare, baffled! I actually wish I liked summer better because I'm not getting the hubby out of here. But at least you all seem to get a few unexpectedly cold days in Colorado! I'm wishing you several of those! :-)

    2. Thanks! Although that's not likely to happen until October, at this point. :( We might get a few cooler hours in the meantime. Sometimes we get hail in July or August for a few hours. Weather here is weird! I still expect weather to be like it was in Maine, where I grew up...the only month hot enough for A/C was August, so you just sweated it out!

  2. Anna, I would happily trade all our rainy, snowy cold days for your heat and sunshine! I don't mind the rain and snow that much, but I dislike the cold on those winter days when exposed skin can freeze in under ten minutes and our pups have trouble walking because their paws hurt.

Best wishes with your current WIPs!

    1. Well, I don't blame you for worrying about the pups because that's pretty miserable, but other than that--I"m up for the trade, Kate! Good luck with your Summer Lovin' giveaway, Kate! (You guys should all check that out!)

  3. Anna, Just yesterday I told my sister I'm such a wuss, I like warm winters and cool summers. I hate being cold, or being breathlessly hot. Our temps went from beautiful low 80's a week ago to this past week and now 111-112. I have to go for my walk at first light. The weather guys are promising us cooler temps (103-104) by Thursday of this week. I'm sorry--anything over a hundred sucks. I'd love to move back to the Northwest, but I get depressed in rain. Interesting how weather has such an effect on us, huh, Anna? Looking forward to your next book. October is always a great month.

    1. lol Low 80's is too hot for me! And rain makes me happy. I think I need to move back to the Pacific Northwest. Or New England. Either way works.

  4. Phoenix hit 115 degrees yesterday so when I think of June it’s always what other surprising records will we break? More than 20 years ago in June the temp hit 123 which grounded the planes at Sky Harbor. Only four more months to go before we start to cool down again. Sorry you've had such problems with your gadgets.

    1. Marion, I would need to move. Immediately! :-) I didn't realize heat grounded planes. That's interesting to know. And unless you want the records to break, I hope you don't break any this month! :-) Kind of enjoying the new gadgetry!

  5. I like summer, but I only like it until the temp hits about 85. AC is my dearest friend, but I do like long days. The short ones tend to give me the blues.

    1. You're good for about 10 more degrees than I can stand, Liz, and I really prefer lower 60s. :-) I'm the opposite with sunlight and days. Last year, my cousin found an article that talked about people with a kind of reverse SAD, who flee from the sun and heat. That is me. I feel silly admitting it, but constant sunlight just wears me down.

    2. I should add here that I don't go OUT when it's 85. :-) I guess 75 is my ideal temp.

  6. I LOVE summer - but I'm in Oregon, where it's perfect. In the winter it seldom freezes, and in the summer, it's seldom over high seventies. The winter is wet and damp, then I long for days when Ron and I have morning coffee and tea on the porch. Anna, Heidi, Roz and Liz and Marion, come and visit me. Life is good in Astoria! We can all sit on my porch and brainstorm. Kate, you can come, too, and bring the pups.

    1. Muriel, I'm packing all my goods. Oregon sounds perfect. If I didn't have family here, I'd be searching for your kind of perfect climate!

  7. We're feeling the heat too, Anna. I love summer, but I prefer my heat and humidity in mid-July and August, not late May. What happened to our spring? Have fun with the holiday novella!

    1. I know, Jill! We went from sort of pleasant to unbearable over night! Again! Although I do think it happened earlier last year. So--there's that! :-)

  8. I'll be your third Arizona girl to post. Yup, 115 yesterday. This morning I walked Lucy-the-dog at 7 a.m. and came home sweaty. I literally walked her the moment I rolled out of bed. I didn't brush my hair or teeth. I just grabbed the leash.
It's almost 9 a.m. and I'll be heading for the public pool and water aerobics.
I wish walking the dog made the pounds disappear.

    1. I used to rush to the pool first thing in the morning when we lived in TX for the same reason, Pamela. I figured I might scare the other folks there (rarely), but man that heat! And the unrelenting sun. Even here, the water gets warm enough toward July that I sweat when I swim. That just shouldn't even be possible! :-)

  9. Anna, this is so interesting. I have a friend who is like you. I call her a vampire because of the way she shrinks from the sun. I'm the opposite. I love summer, but not the heat. I like the hours of daylight. I often joke that I like the sun from the comfort of the shade. Luckily, I live in the Northwest and we rarely get unbearable heat. Although, this weekend it was well up into the 90's. We have no air conditioner and it was brutal.

    1. Carol, give your friend my deepest empathy! My writer friend Karen Whiddon is also the same. We wander through summer, trying not to get too down before cooler temps and the promise of a cloudy day show up! :-) The husband's family is from Washington state, but he lived in the middle of the state, so high desert and some hot, sunny summers. But also--winter! I'd move to Seattle in a heartbeat. Or Iceland. (I'd really like to move back to Maine!)

    2. And oh my heavens! No a/c? What on earth? (Actually, we had none when we lived in HI, but that was one hot house!)

  10. It's been a wonderful summer so far in Anchorage, with long, long mostly sunny days in the 70s. Today, though, it's pouring rain, which I don't mind because it keeps everything green. This is the sort of weather we dream of in January, when it's cold and dark.

I grew up in Texas, so can sympathize with your aversion to heat, Anna. Hope it breaks soon, and have fun gadget shopping.

    1. Beth, that does sound like a nice summer. We lived in Iceland for a little while. Honestly, I was fine with the dark days. The long, sunny ones got to me. A friend of my husband's must have been like me. He actually lined his bedroom windows with tin foil in the summer!

    2. I've seen that here too. At first it was hard to sleep with the light outside, but eventually we got used to it. Although one summer there was this robin who sang every morning outside our window at sun-up (around 4am). I wanted to throttle him.

  11. Give me a hot summer day over a cold rainy winter anytime! lol. And it's been in the 90s here in North Mississippi. But today is a nice 78. :-)

  12. Anna, I've always loved rain...even as a kid. And my youngest is the same way. In fact, the other day he came home from school and said that, when asked, he told a teacher he was in a blah mood because it was sunny out and he liked rainy days. I totally understood by warned him that he if he tells people that, they might think he's having problems and I'll end up getting a call from the school lol!

  13. I'm more of a spring girl but I do love the summer except for the bugs. I can handle the heat because air conditioning has been invented, but there is not enough bug spray in the world to make me happy about mosquitos!

  14. HI Anna. It's so funny because I didn't know who wrote this post, but once I started reading I said I bet this is Anna Adams, and it was!! I'm with you on the heat. The sun actually breaks me out, and when it's humid outside I'm just done! I empathize with you. I look forward to hearing more about the Smoky Mountain series. I just love those Smokies.

  15. Glad to see I'm not the only one who prays for rain and unseasonable temps. Summer in the south is way too hot and miserable. I can't wait to read A Christmas Miracle!
