Creosote, Cactus and Romantic Conflict

by Dana Grimaldi, Associate Editor

A couple weeks ago I traded “springtime” in Toronto for the glorious sunshine of Tucson, Arizona. Heartwarming author Patricia Forsythe had asked me to speak to the Saguaro Romance Writers—Tucson’s chapter of the RWA—and I was delighted to accept!
March in the Greater Toronto Area--still winter coat weather
I’d never been to Arizona before, and it seemed like a different world. Gorgeous blue skies, mountains in the distance and cacti everywhere! After months of snow, ice and freezing temperatures, the warm weather was a bit of a shock.
At the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, we saw the raptor free flight, where Patti, LeAnne Bristow and I had to duck as hawks swooped by overhead. We played Where’s Waldo in the hummingbird aviary, spotted a camera-shy roadrunner and saw some fluffy prairie dogs.

The next day, I talked to the Saguaro Romance writers about how to add lots of conflict to a romance novel as well as how to catch an editor’s eye. I always love talking to authors! It’s fascinating to hear about an author’s work-in-progress and it’s so exciting to let people know what I’m looking to acquire for Harlequin Heartwarming and Harlequin Dare.

And speaking of Heartwarming, there are four new Heartwarming books out this week: A Rancher to Remember by Karen Rock, Holiday Kisses by Anna J. Stewart, Her Unexpected Hero by Cheryl Harper and The Soldier’s Valentine by Pamela Tracy. If you’re looking for an escape, whether it’s from freezing “spring” weather or tax season, these books are perfect! And if you’ve got any suggestions for books that have a vibrant setting—stories that take you to a different world—I’d love to hear about them!
