The Things We Love by Cheryl Harper

In a past life, I was a Crafter with a capital C. As a little girl, I started with cross stitch. Saturday afternoons were meant for Howard Keel musicals or Cubs baseball and cross stitch. Never tell me I was not a cool kid.

My love of crafting and Howard Keel lasted, and it has been a long and winding road through so many different hobbies. Above them all, for me, is knitting. I like working with my hands. After I memorize the pattern, I can watch television (although it is much harder to find Seven Brides for Seven Brothers anywhere these days).

Time is so limited today. The day job takes up a lot of time, and then there's writing. But then...there was a gender reveal and I learned I have a grand-nephew coming.
HERE COMES THE KNITTING!

It was like finding an old friend, one who is perfect for baby gifts. Only one person in the world would convince me to attempt a baby blanket in a chevron pattern. I can't wait to meet him.

Are there things you loved that you set aside for whatever reason that come back just when you need them?

Life gets busy. It's wonderful to have a reminder to slow down and remember the things we love

  1. Sewing comes and goes, and with it comes old movies. Congratulations on your nephew...and his blanket!

    1. Thanks, Liz. Old movies just go with crafting so well.

  2. I’m always in awe of people who sew or knit as I’m all thumbs when it comes to using my hands that way. I have some baby things my mother (a great knitter) made and have given them to my baby granddaughter, so you are making future family heirlooms, Cheryl!

  3. I also spent a lot of Saturday afternoons with the Cubs when I was young--and not so young. You were definitely a cool kid!

  4. I enjoy crafts when I get to them - bead work , patchwork and doing watercolors being some of the top favorites. But writing takes up so much time and I love doing that as well. You showed one of my much-loved movies, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It was one of the first DVDs I ever bought. Best wishes on the new family member!

    1. Yes, that's my problem, too. There is really only one reason that I'll rearrange my schedule and life to make room for something else, and this is it. New baby!

  5. My mom was a fantastic seamstress. She crocheted, but I never learned. We all embroidered a lot. My mom made quilts. I once sewed almost everything my girls and I wore. My oldest daughter wanted me to make her suits even after she worked in retail, because they would be different from what she sold in the store. I sewed a lot for my grand-daughters, too. But somehow I've gotten away from it. I think when it became less expensive to buy things that offered more than what I could sew.

    1. I know what you mean about getting away from it. My mother sewed, too, and did her very best to teach me, but I had the patience of a gnat. She'd have to do all my seam ripping. I miss her so much. I have her sewing machine and my grandmother's, both of them the heavy metal kind in the wood console.

  6. Most of my hobbies have been come and go. I used to make quilts for all my nieces' and nephews' babies, but my last quilt is half done and the "baby" is now playing T-ball. Maybe I'll finish someday. It's a tumbling block quilt, one of my favorite patterns, but it's slow going which is why I never finished. LOVE the chevron baby blanket!

    1. Thank you! Yes, there's still time. The last 2 quilts I did were T-shirt quilts, one for the same nephew who is now having a baby. I don't know how he got old enough to be a father!

  7. Every once in a while I get a wild notion to sew a dress, like I did when I was growing up. I used to cross stitch...a lot! Then I discovered quilting. While I love both, writing seems to take up all my creative energy these days. One day I'll get back to it...

  8. My crafting kicked into high gear in my retirement adventure. Now I not only knit and crochet but spin my own yarn.....it's the ultimate creative experience......while I spin I write in my head then stop and put what's in my head in the computer.....more creative fun.
