The Big Game by Melinda Curtis

Last night was the Superbowl. As my grandfather used to say, "I didn't have a horse in that race." However, we watched, if only to root against the Seahawks (since they are a division rival of our 49ers) and be up on the latest spectacle in the states.

The game didn't disappoint. It was close and came down to the final seconds and one undrafted rookie making a huge play. He was literally humbled and speechless by all the media attention.

Idina Menzel sang the national anthem brilliantly (admit it, you wanted her to belt out "Let it Go" right afterward, too). And Katy Perry...she had the eye of the tiger and was a firework during halftime. What more could you ask for?

But really, let's get right to the point. There are only two reasons to watch the Superbowl if you aren't a die-hard football fan.

  1. We all love the excuse of eating junk food (the 2nd biggest day of the year to overeat, and the biggest day of the year for eating wings - we could have looped them twice around the globe).
  2. It's the one time of year we actually enjoy watching commercials (people are more likely to run to the potty during the game than the commercials). Mr. Curtis noted that there were more teary-eyed ads than any time during the regular season (thank heavens those Budweiser horses came to that puppy's rescue!).
Did you watch the game on Sunday? If so, share your favorite commercial, game moment, or junk food. I'll start: I had nachos!!! It was awesome!!! And I prefer the funny ads - the Doritos commercial where the man was trying to keep his middle seat free was priceless.

Melinda's latest release is a sweet romantic comedy: Always a Bridesmaid. Her next Heartwarming is One Perfect Year (Harmony Valley Book #4) and will be available March 1st.

  1. My favorite was the Pierce Brosnan car commercial. Very funny--he thinks he's being asked to be in an action pix, but instead, he's just driving a car. Here's a third reason to watch the Super Bowl; the commercials are great examples of rhetorical strategies, and I'll be asking my students to analyze one for their next essay!

    1. I did love Pierce (he's still so sexy). I hadn't thought about ads as rhetoricals. How clever!

  2. I admit, I didn't watch the game. The hubby was watching a hunting show and I was working on a synopsis. I was able to keep up with the commercials thanks to a nice play by play on my FB feed. We did have a lot of snacks and junk food yesterday though.

  3. Great synopsis of the game, Melinda.

Sadly, in Canada we get the usual commercials we would be happy to fast-forward through if only we could, not the ones those of you in the US enjoy. On the plus side, it gives us more time to get junk food.

Don't ask how many times I watched last year's Budweiser commercial online!

    1. I loved the Dove Men's commercial about Daddy's and the armed services ad that showed the dad raising his daughter from pigtails to goth girl to the military. (sniff)

    2. Okay, we just watched this year's Budweiser commercial online. Other than the fact that I like wolves and that was NOT a nice wolf, we might have to watch all future games in the US!

  4. I watched the last 10 minutes or so (gearing up to watch The Blacklist)...I"ll watch the commercials online, but I did catch Katy Perry on YouTube. COuld not bring myself to watch when the 9ers weren't playing. :)

  5. As a Seahawks fan (I'm glad we are friends despite our teams), the result was devastating. WHY WOULDN'T YOU GIVE THE BALL TO MARSHAWN LYNCH ON THAT PLAY? It was an incredible game (I'm a Pats fan too, so at least the Hawks didn't lose to a team I don't like). My ovaries exploded during the Budweiser commercial ... there isn't much hotter than a hot guy with a puppy. I also love the Fight Like a Girl commercial and the Pierce Brosnan commercial ... geez, how many car commercials were there??? And what about Kearse's catch? Holy WOW!

  6. We didn't watch the game--except for that last few minutes when the roommate was screaming the same thing Susan just did--because, like Melinda says (it's obvious I have no words of my own), we didn't have a horse in the race. I love the commercials, but will pick them up on line. I have seen the Clydesdales one and loved it--as usual--and snickered at the Fiat one on the news this morning.

    1. At first, I thought the Fiat ad was for Viagra and was a little leary. Italian carmakers can get away with more sexy!

  7. I live about 7 miles from the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. This week I’ve been watching the blimps over the stadium and the planes flying over the area dragging signs. I’m a football fan. Although I didn’t like either team, I wanted the Seahawks to win (Can’t stand New England even though I was a fan back when I lived in New Hampshire.) In the last 6 seconds I thought the Seahawks would win, but it didn’t happen. An exciting game, though.
When the game started, I ran to see the F-16 planes fly overhead. Could hear them, but they were out of sight by the time I made it out my front door. Usually, we have sunny weather here, but Friday and Saturday it rained, making outdoor activities a bust. Then Sunday morning we had fog, and you couldn’t see past 200 feet until nearly noon. Felt really bad that those coming for the Super Bowl couldn't enjoy our usual wonderful weather.

    1. Marion, I used to loathe the Pats only because on of their offensive lineman played against my kid in high school basketball. The Pats player was a brute and already over 6 foot and 250 lbs as a senior. Enter my scarecrow child at 6'2" and 150. The faceplants and skidmarks were brutal. But now that said player is on Miami, I can show the Pats some love.

  8. Living in Washington I'm surrounded by Seahawks fans...watched every second of the game--except for the last two. I turned it off because, like Susan, I will NEVER understand why Marshawn Lynch did not get the ball when they only needed to go one-half of a yard... Loved the Budweiser commercials--the horse and dog and the "real" beer one. Also liked the one with Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric advertising some kind of car. Why so many car commercials? Are these the only companies that can afford to buy advertising these days? Does anyone actually buy a car based on a commercial?

    1. When I used to work at a worldwide company, we could only afford one spot and we had to think about - do we want to have a social message or sell product? Our owner had no sense of humor and after awhile couldn't understand the value of running ads because he saw no sales bump. You have to go big or go home and understand it's a long term strategy about who you are.

  9. Good morning, All! We're still sobbing this morning. Oregonians consider the Seahawks their team, too, so we're heartbroken. But there has to be a loser - at least in the game - still, Russell Wilson will always be a hero to me ("Dreams don't come true, dreams are made true.") Also, I'm from Massachusetts, so the Pats are my second favorite team. We had Buffalo bites, dip, and Angry Orchard. Was yum!

  10. We're still snowed in here near Chicago and the snow is still coming down. Superbowl food is the big topic here with my friends since neither team got me excited about the game. So, we had hot dogs wrapped in bacon, grilled in a grill pan, then in the big buns with salsa, guacamole, onion, pica di gallo and shredded cheese. It was an entire Super Bowl meal in one dish!!!

  11. I ate hot dogs!!! And drank tequila!!! Go Pats! I admit I paid no attention to the commercials or to Katie Perry (I didn't know who she was) because I was eating cream puffs and brownies. Such a great evening....

  12. Didn't snack but did watch the game. Is it okay to say you liked both teams? lol. I'm with the others screaming about throwing the ball, but the kid who caught it is from Mississippi, so...besides, he's so humble. Kept saying over and over how blessed he was.

  13. No snacks but thought the game was intense! That was the craziest ending to any football game ever.

  14. I'll usually watch the commercials, but I'm not a football person (scary to admit lol). I missed it all together this time...but now you have 'Let it go' stuck in my head! ;)
