Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! By Senior Editor Victoria Curran

We have had the most spectacular fall so far, if you can actually call it that. After one of the hottest, driest summers on record, we’ve transitioned into a lovely Indian Summer (can I still use that term or is it rude—apologies if it is). And—just in time for Thanksgiving on Monday—the rain is going to strike and the temperature is going to drop. Of course. But that’s okay because we’ll all be inside hunkered down over turkey (including we vegetarians) and mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. Can’t wait. Plus, we’ve got a 50-50 chance that it’ll be one of those maudlin smoochy family gatherings or one of those leave-as-early-as-you-can because somebody has ticked off somebody else gatherings. It varies year to year, doesn’t it?

Anna J. Stewart’s post on Wednesday made me smile because I just came off a long weekend of wine-tasting, theatre-going and spa treatments ($$$$) with a couple of my good buddies.  I’m not sure if it was all the wine or what but Sunday night we were emailing back and forth sloppy “I love you all…” “You’re wonderful…” “I’m so glad we have one another…” emails. Speaking of a little help from your friends.

I’m hoping we have that kind of a sloppy, huggy family Thanksgiving dinner Sunday!

And that brings me to Harlequin’s Series Editorial Director Joanne Grant, who is returning to the UK today after a grand tour of the New York and Toronto offices. She is such a positive force to be reckoned with, I’m glad she’s on our Series Team! She even inspired a couple of hugs among the Toronto editors. (We are notorious for no hugging; the UK is notorious for much hugging. Not sure where the NYC editors stand.)

The best thing that came out of Joanne’s several meetings with her editors? The knowledge that she is one of us: She LOVES series books. Heartwarming authors are among a group of amazing writers who tell beautiful, uplifting stories that to some readers are the equivalent of that “little help from your friends”. And it’s never a 50-50 thing. These stories give us that warm satisfying happy ending.

Going into the Thanksgiving weekend, I’m grateful for the Heartwarming series! Thank you to the authors and the stories…and, of course, the readers.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, Victoria! :) And you're right--it's so hard to tell which way the Thanksgiving dinner will go... but this year, it's just me, my husband and our 8-yr-old, so I think it's safe to say we'll eat till we can't move and then watch Netflix. ;) So thankful to be writing for Heartwarming and Harlequin.

  6. Happy Thanksgiving! I for one am in denial that thanksgiving is only 6.5 weeks away. I host our family dinner and have to contend with turkey loving carnivores, animals are sacred vegetarians, and a new addition to our family--a self described foodie who is allergic to most vegetables, fruits, and grains. I think I'll come down with the flu that week or maybe find some similarly frustrated friends and stage a mutiny by going away for the weekend.

  10. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Victoria! And to all our Canadian editors and friends. I'm laughing at the whole "which way will Thanksgiving dinner turn out this year?" question. I come from a big family with lots of, um, big personalities. My sisters and I usually spend a good share of the dinner preparations speculating about the dinner dynamics. Thankfully, there is usually more laughter than arguments or tears. Usually. Needless to say, it's always interesting!

  11. Happy Thanksgiving, Victoria. You've probably guessed - major hugger, here. Am hoping all goes well for your dinner. You know, even if it doesn't, that's part of being a family, too. I think every group has someone who needs more drama than the rest of us. Nice that you have such a good bunch of friends - nothing like them!

    1. I've never had wild turkey, LeAnne. How does it compare in flavor to domestic ones? Is the breast meat dark?

  13. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, Victoria. We HW authors are all thankful for you and the rest of the editorial team. Like Melinda, I'll try to restrain myself next time from giving hugs. 😌

  14. Hi All,
Victoria is having trouble commenting so sent this update to share:

What a strange experience: thinking of all the positives that have recently touched my life as I wrote this post and then rescuing a dying bird from my cat's jaws (as I was changing: so out on back deck with no pants on, TMI!) and then racing to a funeral of a very special family friend. He was such an generous, intelligent, creative, loyal individual... I'm all sloppy-teary all over again! (I'll try not to profess my love for everyone...but you know it's there!) Happy Thanksgiving back at you, Patricia. Thank you for being such a wonderful cross-series author for us!
