"Everyone should have a Reagan"-Quote from My Mother

My four year old son calls his step-dad-'My Reagan'. And besides Grandma, 'My Reagan' is by far his favorite adult. They have matching superhero costumes (see below) and they fly helicopters in our living room which have been known to crash into my head, tangle in my hair, resulting in a kitchen-scissor haircut (not the look I was hoping to have at RWA next month). But above all the fun they have together, my son knows that he can count on his Reagan and that's why the two are so close.

I took him on a mom-son date a few weeks ago and in the movie theatre he sat next to another little boy, slightly older who was talking about how his dad was a police officer, and my son says, "My dad..." Pause. "I don't have a dad, I have a Reagan." To say tears filled my eyes was an understatement, because in fact my son does have a 'dad' that he spends time with and loves very much, but his Reagan was still the first person to come to mind.

These days we've all started calling my husband-'My Reagan, Your Reagan, His Reagan' and as my mom says, I think 'Everyone should have a Reagan'. That father figure that they can depend on, look up to-whether it's a dad, an uncle, a grandpa, or friend.

So with father's day coming up this weekend, I just want to give a big Thank You to all the Reagans out there. The title doesn't matter, but the love does:)

  3. That picture is beyond adorable!! I had a Reagan (stepdad) as well. He passed away in 2009. I have several other father figures, including my dad, but my stepfather and I had a special relationship. It seems like your son has that as well. This is such a lovely post just in time for Father's Day.

  4. Jennifer, that is so sweet! I have a step-granddaughter who has a lot of grandmothers in her life so I've always just told her to call me "Carol." We are very close and one day when she was young I was picking her up from school and one of her friends asked her if I was her mom. She said, "No, that's my Carol!" One of my favorite memories from her childhood.

    1. Kids are too cute and I honestly never know what to expect from Jacob. And I think if you asked my son-lots of grandmas would be considered a fantastic thing!

  5. Jennifer, Such a touching post in time for dad's day. Just carry that photo with you and if anyone asks about your haircut--you can show them it's worth every unplanned slice.

    1. Lol-thank you Roz-that's a great idea! Hearing the two of them laughing as I tried to unwrap my hair from around the tiny propellers was definitely worth the shorter hair:) We have a lot of fun in our house:)

  6. Jen - I'm so happy for you! No one knows better than we do that love is everything. It doesn't matter what you call it, who gives it, what you call the person who gives it - it's everything we need. I'm sure that story has to figure in one of your upcoming plots - complete with helicopter tangled in hair - and I'd vote for using the photo for the cover. Maybe with the heroine peeking out of a doorway, smiling with contentment as I'm sure you often must.

  7. Lol, yes I spy on them all the time! They were making a bird house last week-painting the pieces and then putting them together and I snapped so many pictures that my son got annoyed and took my phone away lol!

  8. LOL, you are so lucky. The last picture I have of my husband and son shows both of them picking their noses on purpose! I think I need to write a Reagan hero soon.
