Patricia Johns: Ordinary isn't so bad!

In my January Harlequin Heartwarming release, A BAXTER'S REDEMPTION, Isabel Baxter was one the beauty queen daughter of a wealthy man, but when she suffers a disfiguring accident, she has to adjust to life an an "ordinary woman."

How does she deal with men now?

Speaking as an "ordinary woman," we have an awful lot to offer! I might not turn every head when I walk into a room, but there is one man who notices when I come in... and I married him!

So in solidarity with all the "ordinary women" out there, here is a list of some of the things we offer:

1. Beauty.
It might be unique, but it's there! Magazines and ad space aren't the only judges of what is beautiful.

2. A sense of humor.
A woman who can laugh out loud at something funny is not to be brushed aside easily. Especially if she can laugh at herself, too. A sense of humor is for the long haul--twenty years from now, we'll still be funny.

3. Empathy/Compassion
We know what it's like to be overlooked or to meet with disappointment. So when our guy has a bad day, we feel for him. And having someone who really gets it is important in a relationship.

4. Intelligence
Supermodels can be smart, too; don't get me wrong. But smarts are an important asset! My husband has said more than once that he's glad he married a smart woman. I make his life easier because I'm in it.

5. Sensuousness
A woman who can appreciate food can appreciate other pleasures, too. We don't feel the need to deny ourselves dessert in order to fit into a size 2. If you're normal in the US, you're between a size 14-18. We eat, and we like it.

6. Loyalty
There is nothing quite so attractive as a person you can count on no matter what. She'll be there for you, because that's who she is. When she loves, she loves hard. When she finds the right guy, she doesn't take that for granted, either.

What else do we offer--those of us who are "ordinary?" I'd love to hear your additions to the list!

Former beauty queen Isabel Baxter returns to her hometown, scarred after a near-fatal accident. But in high school, she was the fantasy of every teenage boy in Haggerston, Montana, including James Hunter. Even though James was too far below her social circle to be noticed…

Now her father's attorney, James isn't ready to forgive Isabel for the part she played in his own family tragedy. Yet she seems eager to make amends and prove herself capable of being more than a pretty face. Has the girl he once worshipped—his boss's daughter—grown into a woman James can respect…and maybe love?

I write sweet romance for the Love Inspired, Western Romance and Heartwarming lines for Harlequin. This is my first Heartwarming release, and I'm very excited to be here! In 2017, I have 8 releases scheduled. If you'd like to keep up with me, come by my website, or my Facebook page! I'd love to stay connected. :)

  2. We ordinary gals are extraordinary because we get down in the dirt with our kids, have grandpa over for dinner even when we're serving soupy lasagna (didn't look like that in the picture) and we don't throw a tantrum when the electricity goes out. Yup, it's true. I'll go out to dinner even if I can't blowdry my hair LOL

    Great post :)

    1. Soupy lasagna is still lasagna! LOL! True--we don't expect magazine perfection in our looks, so getting ready is that much quicker.

  7. I'm looking forward to reading the story of Isobel's sudden transformation to ordinary. That would be tough.

I think ordinary women can be good listeners, because we aren't accustomed to always being the center of attention.

Wow, eight releases. You've been a busy lady.

  12. Hail to ordinary women! When we were younger, I'd point out a woman I thought was beautiful and his response was "Yes, but can they bait their own hook?" Can't wait to read Isabel's story!
