Kathleen…In A Nutshell

By Kathleen Scheibling
Senior Editor, Harlequin Heartwarming

Authors, readers, friends—hello! I’m Kathleen Scheibling and I’m the Senior Editor of Harlequin Heartwarming. While I’ve known some of you for years, and had a fabulous time meeting many of you at RWA this past July, you may not know much about me. Here’s a brief summary:

I’m easily influenced. Nutshell by Ian McEwan is on my table beside my laptop, so that’s where I got the title of my blog post. We’re reading Nutshell in my book club. Oh, yeah, I’m in a book club.

I’m an ovo pollo/pescatarian. This is not a new political party, it’s a way of eating. Basically, I don’t eat meat other than poultry and fish. Most of the time I eat like a vegan who has a shellfish addiction. I love to cook and grill all summer long. Here’s a picture of my favorite summer meal:

I watch a lot of films. I love film—especially classic movies. I love going to the theatre (leaving the house!) and watching films in a crowd—as long as they don’t pull out their cell phones. The Toronto International Film Festival recently wrapped here. I saw films from Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Iceland, Finland, Canada and the U.S. My favorite was Ladybird, the directorial debut of Greta Gerwig, an American actor who is an indie icon. She’s the tall one on the left.

Speaking of film, I have a crush on this guy. Taika Waititi is charming, handsome, smart and seems like a very silly person. He directed a beautiful film called Hunt for the Wilderpeople – highly recommended! He’s a star in New Zealand and Australia but he’s about to become a big-time Hollywood dude as he directed Thor: Ragnarok. I will go see that because if Taika directed it, it’s going to be funny. Speaking of funny, I like funny.

I’m not afraid of snakes. Especially if they are tiny and hiding in my fire pit. Well, it’s not my fire pit. It was at my campsite in northern Ontario, where I went canoeing this summer. Canoeing is fun, but it’s not funny. Cycling and hiking are also fun, and I do these things a lot. One of the reasons I love summer! Places I canoed, biked and hiked this year include the Amalfi Coast, Italy, North Bay, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec, Massasauga Provincial Park, Ontario, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Just snuck that Amalfi Coast reference in there, didn’t I. I went to Italy last May. It was the greatest place ever. Why? Shellfish. (And octopus, sorry.)

Well, that’s me in a nutshell. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of YOU!

Kathleen

  1. Kathleen what a great overview. I feel as if I've known you a long time, but just learned a lot about you. What you didn't mention is that you're a really good editor, and an empathetic human. Did you like Octopus? I only had it once and found it too rubbery to eat. Have a fun Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.

  2. Kathleen, I'm not afraid of snakes either! My husband on the other hand...well, let's just say his reaction to them is quite funny. Not for him, I'm sure, lol.

And wow, you've hiked/biked in some amazing places. You're so lucky!

Loved reading about you in a clamshell...I mean nutshell. Sorry, with the seafood talk, I couldn't resist. I know. I'm not that funny (lol).

  3. Hi, Kathleen. So nice to meet you. I AM afraid of snakes, but not so much of editors anymore (there was definitely a time, but it's hard to be scared of Charles) and I join you in your love for traveling and shellfish.

  4. Nice to meet you Kathleen and to know so much about you already! I too am not afraid of snakes, which is good as we have a lot on the island where our cottage is. Once we had one in our kitchen and that was not much fun. Happy Thanksgiving!

  6. Hi, Kathleen! I love Ian McEwan. A book club I once belonged to read Atonement, and it produced one of the most animated discussions. I'm a fan of fun and funny, too. Best!

  7. Hi Kathleen! Loved a peek at you! And isn't the Amalfi coast amazing?!? My daughter and I went there several years ago. She also had shellfish and octopus. I'm the opposite of you. I could live off red meat alone. I hate seafood, much to my husband's chagrin. Where I live, there aren't many film festivals or shows although I would love to go to one sometime.

  8. Thanks for this profile--how enviable to have the film festival as a regular event. I've heard only wonderful things about it. I'm a fan of Heartwarming, of course, but I sure liked that Everlasting line, too. Enjoyed reading about your range of interests and experience.

  9. Hi Kathleen! It was wonderful to meet you this summer. But this inside glimpse at you might be even better. Seafood is my favorite, too. (Even octopus.) I'm lucky to live close to the coast where we can get it fresh. Hiking is one of my favorite past times as well. But snakes? Um, no. Thankfully, we don't have any venomous ones around here or I might rethink my hiking passion.

  10. Welcome, welcome to Heartwarming, Kathleen! So great to meet up with you this summer and I'm with you on the seafood (although I've been known to ingest a cow or two ). I've never had the guts (ha) to try octopus--squid, yes. Guess I need to add it to my bucket list, LOL (I don't think I meant that literally). Have a great weekend--and thank you for sharing!

  11. Welcome to Heartwarming, Kathleen! It was wonderful meeting you in Orlando this summer! Actually, you had me at that grilled corn on the cob, not to mention the seafood. I've tried octapus, but it's not a fave, I have to say. I will also say that living in the Gulf Coast region for three decades of my life spoiled me rotten for fresh seafood and boy, do I miss Mesquite grilled trout and Red Snapper. I love all your travel that you but I'm most envious of the Toronto Film Festival. I'll live vicariously through you! Have a lovely weekend.

  12. It was such a pleasure to meet you at RWA, Kathleen :-) I loved your shellfish pictures. I'm 2nd generation Italian and have great memories of sitting around tables loaded with steamed mussels which my nonna and her sisters dug from the beaches on Long Island or Christmas Eve when we swerved 13 different kinds of fish dishes. My favorite was a cold dish of marinated octopus- delicious:-)
