Most of us have a fondness for small town romances. I know I do. But I also have a thing for small town sheriffs. Two in particular: Jason and Nate, both star in versions of Support Your Local Sheriff.
Jason, played by James Garner in the movie version (a rom-com/western parody), is a man who didn't plan on being sheriff. He's on his way to Australia, after all. And although he is a darn good shot, he'd much rather keep the peace by talking his way out of trouble.
Sly humor, chutzpah to spare, and with a face the ladies all drool over, Jason was such a hit, they created a sequel (kind-of/sort-of). Support Your Local Gunfighter.
If you haven't seen support Your Local Sheriff, rent it on Netflix or check my Facebook page tomorrow HERE for your chance to win a copy in my launch day prize package.
Nate is the sheriff in my Harmony Valley series. He's the tall, dark and silent type, revealing bits and pieces about himself reluctantly in four of the nine preceding books.
In discussions with Mae, the former dress shop proprietor, she gleaned he'd left a woman at the altar. When she died, she left Nate a pink wedding dress, because a woman would have to be brave enough to take him on and wear something other than white.
In discussions with Slade, he admitted to having served in the military. It's not until later that we learn he was a sharpshooter. And it's not until his own story that I reveal why he chose that profession.
When my version of Support Your Local Sheriff opens, Nate has had a typical day in Harmony Valley, rounding up chickens and checking on the elderly. To cap off his day, he attends the town council meeting and is surprised to see his former best friend, Julie. She's the sister of the woman he was going to marry. Julie is hot - and by that, I don't mean sexy. She's mad at Nate for jilting her sister. Somehow, in the course of the usual Harmony Valley madness, Nate and Julie end up running for the same position - Sheriff.
Do you have a favorite small town sheriff? Either one you've read about or seen on TV/in a movie or perhaps (authors) one you enjoyed writing. I'd love to hear about it.

You have me totally intrigued, Mel. There's something about a Sheriff in a romance...and what better way to kick off fall than with returning Harmony Valley and Christmas Town? :) Congrats to you and all the October releases!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new release! Sounds intriguing!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up, Westerns were a big part of TV and movies. I had several teen crushes on the leading men - all sheriffs. Your new release is a modern take on those old Westerns - love the premise! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteNot only was James Garner my favorite of all time actors in westerns on television, but I have Support your Local Sheriff in video and DVD. I watch it from time to time. There's a "thing" about an old western on a Sunday afternoon, that brings back so many memories. Love your Harmony Valley stories and this one looks super!
ReplyDeleteLove James Garner! I haven't seen that movie in years - adding it to my TBW pile. Can't wait to read Nate and Julie's story. Sounds hilarious with them running against each other for sheriff.
ReplyDeleteI loved that movie and saw it several times. And I'm half way through your book and loving every line. I grew up in a small town with a sheriff who was quite colorful and not nearly as upstanding as Jason or Nate.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read the book. I think I've seen the movie long ago, but I'm going to have to watch it again. Off to Netflix to find it.
ReplyDeleteLove James Garner and that movie. Haven't seen it in forever, but it's clearly time for a re-watch. Congrats on the new release!
ReplyDeleteA pink wedding dress, a former sharp shooter and a mad sister? I can not wait to read this book!!! Sounds amazing. I love Support Your Local Sheriff. It's one of my favorite movies. I have a sheriff in my current wip. He's not the main character, but his wisdom and compassion play a huge part in the helping the hero overcome his demons. I'm having a lot of fun writing him.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so good! Can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteCanada doesn't have sheriffs who are elected, so we miss out on that fun! As always, you've dreamed up a cunning plot, Melinda! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteJames Garner was my first star crush when I was young. :) Congratulations on your release, Melinda! What a great cover!
