Who Decides These Things? By Patricia Forsythe

Once again, it’s time for Valentine’s Day, when we think about our loved ones, exchange cards and gifts, and eat too much chocolate. It has grown in popularity, and commercialism, since the mid 1800’s.

Romance writers are very fond of Valentine’s Day because it’s about love, but Valentine’s Day isn’t the only holiday in February. This year, we also have Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, which falls on Valentine’s Day. It’s also National Organ Donors Day. There’s a message in there somewhere -- maybe about eating too much chocolate? The 15th is Singles Awareness Day. I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that single people are aware of the fact.

Here in the United States, we also have Groundhog Day in February, as well as George Washington’s birthday, and Abraham Lincoln’s. Maybe because the 12th is Lincoln’s birthday, it’s also National Lost Penny Day where people are encouraged to search for loose change. Turn over those sofa cushions?

One list I saw had seventy-three different awareness and celebration days in February, a heavy load for a month that only has twenty-eight days. February 1st was No Politics Day. I’m sorry I missed that one. The 3rd was Eat Ice Cream For Breakfast Day. I’m really sorry I missed that one. Some days have so many celebrations and remembrances listed, you could exhaust yourself trying to take part in them all.

It occurred to me that anyone could declare any kind of national awareness day they wanted to. Therefore, I’m going to declare February 14th as Give A Romance Writer A Hug Day. How about you? What kind of day would you like to declare?

Patricia Forsythe is the author of many romances, both traditionally and electronically published.  Her most recent Harlequin Heartwarming releases were in the Oklahoma Girls series; At Odds With The Midwife, The Husband She Can’t Forget, and His Twin Baby Surprise.

  1. Cute post! I was reading it and thinking there must be a story in one of those holidays :) Now, I'm off to eat ice cream and hunt for loose change.

    1. Yes, Cathy! We need to write about some obscure holidays, especially ones that center around food, I think.

  2. Yes, Patricia! I’m all for Give a Romance Writer a Hug Day! Why not, given the wild range of special days this month? Since we got rid of the penny here in Canada, we’d have to get rid of that day though. It’d be interesting to,see how Feb. compares to other months re those special days. Maybe we need extra cheering-up in Feb. but not in July. Thanks for my morning chuckle!

    1. You're welcome, Janice. I didn't know Canada had done away with the penny. Thanks for the information.

  3. Don't answer your phone day? No reading emails day? Read a book in a day day?

  4. Months ago, a post prompted all of us to agree that we'd have a National Heartwarming Day, if not Month. Hunting for pennies would be an excellent challenge here in Canada. Soon there'll be more American ones than Canadian in circulation. Thanks for the fun post, Patricia! Hugs, anyone?

  5. I love your suggestion. I think we should find a spare day and maybe give away a romance book. Just walk down the street and hand one out. Didn't they used to have something where you'd leave a book and if someone found it they noted it on a FB page? I'll take the 14th to send everyone a cyber hug.

  6. Thanks for the reminders. From the sound of things we can pretty much make up our own special designations and announce them--so hug a romance writer is doable. Meanwhile, let's "exploit" the 14th as much as possible to promote romance. I guess that's our best reader-author day!

  7. Patricia, I, too, am sorry I missed No Politics Day. Lol. I like Kim's idea of Read a Book Day (I'm guessing something like this might exist.) A No Electronics Day might be fun, although good luck getting people on board, right?

    1. Yes. At least people are thinking about love.

  8. Wow! I had no idea about some of those days. Can I have a National Book Reading day too? I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day (don't flog me) just because it's been so commercialized. But I'm all for love any day of the year!

  9. Sending early virtual hugs to all my favorite romance writers here today, as well as to romance readers, my favorite kinds of people. You're worth celebrating!
