Break Time by Cheryl Harper

Last week was a difficult week. I don't have to tell you that. For you, for all of us, I'm putting on my most positive, most annoying Pollyanna attitude, to say "It won't always be like this, so hold on."
In the face of all that's going wrong, it's hard to stay hopeful, but I'm going to give it my shot. I'm a romance writer and I know that things work out in the end.

I hear you out there. You want to argue or point at the nearest raging trash fire and motion helplessly. Yes, even that can change.
In the immortal words of one famously optimistic philosopher, a Mr. Han Solo: "Never tell me the odds!"

Here are some reasons to smile wherever you are. Okay? HERE WE GO.

10. Sunday was Iced Tea Day, but I live in ARKANSAS and we celebrate that pretty much everyday of the year. Add some sugar and call it perfect. If you're tired or worn out, take a break and grab an icy cold drink. It will help.
9. Also, June is Candy Month. The entire month! I mean, is that good planning or what?
8. Today? You ask what today is? It's Corn on the Cob Day. I picked a photo showing the "before" picture. No corn kernels in teeth. You're welcome. If you're worn out, maybe you're hungry and not for easy or fast. Go for something solid, even if you need a toothpick later.
7. Dog days are here. At my house, they never left. Jack does some very heavy lifting when life is challenging, so he deserves his beauty rest. If you're tired, can you take a nap? Burning the candle at both ends is hard on you. You deserve some rest.
6. The second week in June is phone-a-friend week. (Not really. I totally made that up, but some of these days sound made up, you know? I'm pretty sure we could make this a thing if we wanted to.) I have a friend who can make me laugh no matter how long it has been since I talked to her. One call makes a difference. Nothing changes, but everything seems more manageable.
5. Other days that are coming up and you don't want to miss: National Hollerin' Contest Day (I did NOT make that one up, but I might be a contender), National Kissing Day, World Sauntering Day (is there a trophy for this because I'm in but only if I can win a trophy)... AND THESE ARE JUST JUNE DAYS. Can you imagine what a weird month like August might get up to?
4. Three words: Ice. Cream. Truck. Find one. Chase one. Stop one. Enjoy.
3. Three more words: Snow. Cone. Now? If anyone asks you that, the answer is always "YES."
2. Romance writers are writing. You can't stop them from telling stories that make you believe in happily ever after. You don't want to miss the new release from your favorite or that debut author you've not even met yet who is going to speak right to your heart. There are so many good books coming your way, you just better get ready.
1. You're awesome and I'm not the only one who knows it. Your tenacity in sticking with this list alllllll the way to the end deserves a cookie or frozen treat of your choice, chillin' sweet tea, and an uninterrupted break with your current favorite book. Do that. Things will look better for it.

  1. Ah, this post was fun to read Cheryl. A great lift for a Monday and I’m so happy that my recent candy-eating binge has been validated! May July bring many more quirky days and excuses for celebration. :)

  2. I always wonder who makes up all those "today is" days. And how do they get them recognized? Anyway, your post is a great Monday post. I'll take those iced tea and candy days whenever I can get them.

  3. It doesn't take much to realize that in our First World countries, many of our First World problems really are 1) First World problems or 2) there are First World cures for our problems, and for everything else...well, that's life, unfortunately. Thanks for pointing our life's small, daily joys!

    1. Thank you! "Never tell me the odds" is something I say often enough that it's right there, stored where I keep all the important stuff in my brain.

  6. Glad to know my ice tea yesterday was appropriate. It was unsweetened though - is that a problem?

    1. Hmmmmm. Well, it would be a problem *for me* but I'll allow it. Even by southern sweet tea standards, I brew mine strong and sweeeet!

  11. Enjoyed the post. I've also wondered who made up some of those official emphases. And there always seems to be a new one added. Some days have more than one attached to them. Ah well. Life is complex and there are many important things to do and enjoy. But I haven't seen an ice cream truck in years. I did, however, make a small organic chocolate milkshake yesterday.
