Keeping Up With Technology by Melinda Curtis

I love new technology, but I don't always use it to its full potential. I could probably revise that statement to say: I don't EVER use technology to its full potential. Let's look at some of my examples.

I have the Amazon Dot. Yes, Alexa is part of our household. Do I have her linked to our security alarm and heating/air systems? Uh, no. I can ask her to set a timer, read me an Instant Pot recipe for spaghetti, and play music.

I have a smart phone. I have three emails on it, as well as music and (of course) my pictures. I also installed the instagram app. Ask me how many times I've posted anything on Instagram other than a basic photo. Hint: that would be zero.

Oh, let's not forget my Instant Pot. This baby will make everything from yogurt to black bean soup to a turkey! It has a delay function and a timer. I could set it to make oatmeal every morning. And what do I use it for? Basically, a crock pot on steroids.

Yep, I may use some of the latest technological wonders, but I don't take advantage of everything they have to offer.

Here's one final example. Anna J. Stewart told me there's a new program to make book trailers (ahem, I didn't master the last one). But I did search my computer for a video program and found a little Microsoft gem. Did I add music and really make this beauty sing? I think you know the answer to that question. Please note: I'm not even sure this video is going to load properly!

Are you taking full advantage of technology? Are you more like me? Or does technology scare you?

Melinda Curtis is an award-winning, USA Today Bestseller. With over 50 romances under her belt (including 25 with Harlequin), Melinda should be taking bigger advantage of technology! Her latest release is The Rancher's Redemption, Book 3 in the multi-Heartwarming author Return of the Blackwell series.

  1. Mel, you use technology a whole lot more than I do. The more things that crop up, the more frustrated I get. I'm waiting for the robot to be me and will do all the tech stuff for me.

  2. I can do some things and not others. I bought a Keurig coffee maker last week and am still figuring it out :) It's kind of funny because between us, I'm more tech savvy than my husband. I'm the one who has to switch between regular TV and the Firestick because after almost two years, he's still clueless :)

  3. I am one of the few people (I guess) who loves technology! I have my Keurig coffee maker programmed to come on at 6 a.m. and go off at 9. I program my thermostat for different temperatures, depending on the time of day. And I use Scrivener and Scapple to write my books. :-)

  4. I play around with a lot of technology for my day job and like to think that I'm good at it, but in reality, I'm not. At all. My son comes by the house and shows me how to do things that totally blows my mind!

  5. Not only does it scare me, I'm also old enough that no one is surprised when I don't get it. I'm pretty friendly with Word and some aspects of my iPhone. That's about it...

  6. I love technology except when I hate it, which is at least a quarter of the time. A few days ago, I had to change the empty yellow ink cartridge because my printer refused to print with an empty cartridge, even though I was printing in black. After that page printed, it said black was empty. I changed the black cartridge, the printer hummed for fifteen minutes or so, and it shut down. And refused to turn on again. Ever. "It's dead, Jim." I now have a new printer to learn.

  7. I have such a hard time with technology! I get by... I made my own website and blog, I can do some stuff on the computer and phone, but it really stresses me out. This weekend our printer wouldn't work and I was so frustrated, I was yelling at it!

  8. I have a love-hate relationship with technology. I could learn to use equipment to its potential, but it it often seems as if it doesn't save any time. Besides, technology changes so quickly, by the time I've figured it out, there's a new gadget on the market that works a different way.

  9. I just got a smartphone in May. I think that answers the question. LOL

  10. You're way ahead of me, Mel! Thank goodness I have teenagers or I'd be living in the dark ages lol.
