Is Love in the Air? by Amy Vastine and Carol Ross

Tomorrow is the big day.

Or maybe it isn't.

February 14th can mean different things to different people.

Twenty-five years ago, I would have been looking forward to my boyfriend taking me out to dinner, spoiling me with flowers and chocolates, and giving me that fancy Valentine's Day card from Hallmark.

Tomorrow, I'm looking forward to an exciting evening of helping my sixteen-year-old daughter study for her AP US History test, praying that no one else has caught the stomach bug my fourteen year old had all day yesterday (yuck!), and maybe eating some chocolates with my boyfriend-now-husband while we snuggle on the couch catching up on the episode of The Walking Dead we missed on Sunday.

Ah, what time will do to the romance! It doesn't mean that romance is dead. It just means that priorities change, budgets shrink (did I mention all my money goes to Clemson University now?), and we find new ways to show the people we love that they are important to us. Snuggling is pretty much one of my favorite things to do. I would take that over a fancy dinner any day! The most important thing is that we let the people we love know that they mean something to us. How we show it doesn't have to come from a Hallmark card or a heart-shaped box of chocolates. It can be as simple as spending some time together. A touch, a smile. Love is love is love is love as someone much wiser than me once said.

But not everyone has a significant other to go out to dinner with or to snuggle with on the couch. So what does February 14th mean to them? Well, I have seen ladies all over the internet recently talking about celebrating Galentine's Day. "Gal" as in hanging with their gals aka girlfriends and embracing the joys of not being attached. There is wine to be drunk, chocolate to still be eaten, and no pressure to make sure your legs are shaved before you go to bed that night (I actually love that part the most!) As some of my fellow Heartwarming sisters pointed out in an earlier blog post this month, friendships are one of greatest gifts we as women can give each other. What better day to celebrate those amazing women in our lives than on the day that symbolizes love. I know I love my friends!

I'm almost wondering how I can work it so I can celebrate both Valentine's Day and Galentine's Day this year. Maybe I could have dinner with the family, leave my husband in charge of studying for AP History because that's not my strong subject anyways, run out and catch that new movie about being stuck in a romantic comedy with Liam Hemsworth (yes, please) with my girlfriends, eat some chocolate, giggle about everything, come home and snuggle the hubby while eating some more chocolate, and fall asleep in a blissful chocolate coma.

That would be a pretty darn good February 14th.

What are your plans for tomorrow? Are you celebrating Valentine's Day or Galentine's Day?

  1. I like the idea of Galentine's Day. Wish I'd done that back when I was single :) Hubby and I have only been married a couple of years, so we're still in that romantic stage and going out to dinner tomorrow night <3

  3. I never thought of Valentine's Day as simple a day for romance. For me, it's all about love in whatever form we can wholesomely practice it. So, Happy Valentine's Day to all, and enjoy the chocolate.

    1. I like that idea too. My mom always gave us Valentines as kids and she continues to give all her grandkids Valentines too. I think spreading the love is always a good thing!

  4. Happy Valentine's Day. I'd never heard of Galentine's Day, but it's probably fun. My dh got me a massage and I can't wait for that.

  5. I just finished making my husband's Valentine just like I have every year since 1975. Something that started when we were dating has become a tradition. This year's card is a poem with illustrations by me.......I'm a writer, not an artist😉 but my husband will appreciate it. Tomorrow night is dinner out and he already bought me flowers from the local Publix knowing I hate to pay the florist's bill. The 15th is his birthday so I'll make his favorite meal for that and we'll stay in. A little chocolate decadence will probably be in the form of desserts! Enjoy!

  6. Valentine's Day had me caring for my daughter home sick with the stomach flu. Nothing shows love more than snuggling a sick kiddo as they cough in your face, lol. I did manage to make some chocolate covered strawberries for my husband though. And on Valentine's Day, I do like to send text messages to all the people I love including friends and family!
