Do You Know Your Love Language?

My first book came out on Friday. I've never experienced a book launch before so I wasn't exactly sure what I should do. I mean, I started writing this book three years ago. I had to take the day to really let it all sink in...and celebrate!

Doesn't everyone's family bring their own cake to a restaurant? No? Just mine?

For me, there's no better way to celebrate an event than by going out to eat with my family. So that's what we did. We ate Mexican food (my favorite!), we talked and several people brought me flowers.

I don't know what it is about flowers, but I'm pretty sure every woman makes the same lovely face when she gets them. For me, as much as I do appreciate the gift, it's the thoughtful note attached that I cherish the most.

As a romance writer, I think I'm always trying to think of ways to have my characters show love to each other.

In A Promise Remembered, William has deeply hurt Annie in the past. When he returns, it takes time to earn back her trust...and love. After talking about the troubles in their past, Annie admits she sometimes climbs out on her roof at night to stare at the moon. She imagines that somewhere in the world, there is a different version of herself, a happier version, staring up at the moon too. William knows he's hurt Annie and wants to make amends. So he buys her a small gift right then and there. It's a token not just of his apology, but his desire to start fresh with her. If she accepts his gift, she might just let him.

He fished his wallet from his back pocket.

“I’d like to buy that for you,” he said, counting through his cash.

She quickly tucked the print into the stack. “You don’t have to do that,” she muttered, but William leaned over her and retrieved it.

“How much for the small print?” he called to the artist.

“Forty-five for the lady.”

“See? It’s meant to be,” William said, handing over exact change. Annie reached again to stop him.

“William, I don’t need anything from you…” But before she could finish her protest, he clasped her outstretched hand tightly in his and closed the gap between them. Her eyes widened in surprise, her breath catching under the sharpness of his stare.

“Anyone who loves the moon as much as you do deserves to have this at her fingertips. This way you’ll always have the moon with you.”

So what about you? How do you feel and show love? Years ago I read a book that asserted there are five different love languages. People tend to have a primary love language which is not only the way you best feel love but the way you also tend to show love.

As I felt loved with my family while chowing down on Mexican food Friday (did I mention the endless bowls of chips and salsa?), I found this funny example to help you figure out your love language. Here are the five love languages as best expressed through...what else, but tacos.

So which one is yours?

The Five Love Languages
1. Words of Affirmation - "Your tacos are delicious!"
2. Gifts - "Here. I brought you some tacos."
3. Quality Time - "Let's go out for tacos together."
4. Acts of Service - "I made you tacos."
5. Physical Touch - "I want to hug you like a taco."

  1. I loved this post! After almost 48 years with the love of my life, I think we need to learn and speak (although some more fluently than others) all five of those languages. Good luck with your first book and welcome to Heartwarming!

  3. Congratulations on your release--I love the excerpt you included. I think I'm a little partial to "quality time," as in "Let's go out for..." But I agree that with family, friends and love partners, all five come in to play at some point. All the best with A PROMISE REMEMBERED.

  4. Congratulations on your release!!! I have not read the book about the 5 love languages yet, but I've heard a lot about them and know people that use them a lot in their plotting and characterization. And your excerpt was wonderful!

  5. Congratulations, Elizabeth! I'm so glad your family celebrated with you and gave you all the love :) I'm with Liz, I think the secret to a long and happy marriage is to speak all of those languages. And like Virginia, my favorite is #3, the quality time. But the one I practice the most with all my family is probably #4. Fun post!
