My Favorite Things. . .

. . .It’s a clever mashup from a great song in a good musical that inspired a marvelous film.  Now, I know a lot of you may be groaning at that!  Fair enough.  But the movie, particularly, has a bunch of heart-tuggingly sentimental connections for my family.

One of my favorite things is being an aunt and I was reminded of that again recently when my nine-year-old nephew and I spent the day together.  Just us.

Lately, I’ve been noticing how “grownup” he seems. Not just taller, but also developing his own thoughts and ideas.  All very interesting.  I’m glad he’s curious about lots of things and asks questions.  It’s give-and-take though, because without him I’m sure I wouldn’t have ever been embroiled in a light sabre battle, become a Lego master, or laughed and cried my way through as many animated films as I have.  Who’s teaching whom? I often wonder.

I like that the Harlequin Heartwarming series focuses on different family relationships and multi-generations.  Whether those relationships are easy or challenging, writing and reading about them can be such a positive, supportive way for us all to connect.

Happy Canada Day and Happy 4th of July!

  5. It's true, kids do keep you young. I can speak from experience.

  6. Being an auntie is one of my favorite roles. I think we're in a unique position to learn things the kids would never share with their parents or grands. It gets better with each wave of kids. We're doing things with great great nieces and nephews that we did with their grandparents and they still manage to tickle all of us.

  7. Family relationships are one of my favorite things about Heartwarming, also. And what an amazing aunt you are! I was noticing this week how grown-up my almost 4 year old granddaughter is now. We have actual conversations. She listens to what I'm saying and responds. She's also very good at saying "Moo-moo, put the phone down and look at me" when she wants to make sure I'm listening to her. They grow up so fast!

  8. Kids grow up way too fast!!! So glad you get to spend time with your nephew. What a special bond. And to ditto the sentiment in the other comments, this is exactly what makes the Heartwarming line a favorite with our readers.

  9. My oldest is nearly nine and it's such a fun age. Everything is a new adventure for them and they're usually game for anything new and challenging. Someone asked my daughter if she liked camping. She responded, "I've never been, but I'd bet I'd love it!" It's a fun season. So glad you get to spend time with your nephew. And yes, Heartwarming books are a treasure:-)

  10. That' a great age, all right. I love it when you can see ideas developing in kids, and they do come up with some lines and stories that are unforgettable and become part of the family lore. Looking forward to seeing you in NY.
