SUMMERTIME ANTICIPATION By CATHERINE LANIGAN

For the first time in so many years I can’t count, I’m actually going on a summer trip that does not involve business, books or a funeral. I’m on my way to Mystic Sea Port, Connecticut to see my granddaughter who is interning at the aquarium there.  I haven’t been to Mystic since I was a kid and I’m looking forward to seeing the area and all the sites, but mostly I miss Caylin.

This has been Caylin’s first real time away from home. Though she will be a senior at Texas A &M Sea Aggies in Galveston, Texas, my son and his wife, live in Houston. So, being close to her home wasn’t what THIS very long distance away has been. Their driving trip to take Caylin from Houston to Mystic was days and days of travel. And of course, when they fly up to drive her back home, they’ll hit some interesting sites on the return.

Throughout the summer, Caylin has blogged every week about her adventures as an intern. Teaching Juno, the baby white Beluga whale to trill his “R’s” like Caylin. To sorting, cleaning fish that feeds the aquarium animals.

Caylin’s dedication to her marine biology courses has paid off, and in hilarious fashion. From the fact that for hours a day she has to wear a ski suit inside a freezer locker where the fish food is kept, to the learning that fish smell does not easily come out of her sneakers. (We may buy her those new clean smelling sneakers she needs this weekend.)

For us this up coming weekend, it will be an adventure. Since I only have about 40 hours with Caylin, we have to make the most of every minute. Maybe a trip to Cape Cod will be in order. Who knows?  We will go where the wind and fancy blows us. Just as you’d expect from a novelist and a promising blogger/writer.

I hope you all are having an adventure, too!  Happy Summer!

  1. Catherine, she's so lucky! That sounds like such an amazing internship and experience. And too funny about getting fish smell out of sneakers. I can only imagine lol!

(Note to all: The reason you aren't seeing photos is because Blogger was being finicky when Catherine tried to load them. They may appear later...but I think her post is vivid enough that I can 'see' the pictures in my mind ;)! )

    1. Rula, you are too kind. I'm so frustrated with blogger, because this isn't the first time on my end. I know I got a new computer but come on, guys! I need angelic technical help!

    1. Thank you so much, Janice. I had this fabulous video of Caylin teaching little Juno the white Beluga baby to trill his "r's" and he did! Amazing. I hope to get her permission to post excerpts from her hilarious blogs about life for a Houston, Texas girl wearing a ski suit all summer long. She cannot believe we all live in WINTER where so much gear is required to live! LOL!

  3. Sounds like an amazing trip to share with a special young woman. And how nice not to have to focus on anything but fun. I hope you have a great time--don't you love that part the coast? Gorgeous!

  4. Catherine, your trip sounds wonderful, and yay for your granddaughter. One of my grandtwins just graduated in Anthropology and Primate Studies. Last summer her internship was in South Africa at a primate preserve. It's so wonderful what our new young women are doing with their lives. You have a great time.

    1. Roz, I couldn't agree more. These young ladies are fearless in a way I would never have dreamed. They are the heroines of the new age. In the face of all the doom and gloomers, they shine like flashing angels to me. Love the story of the grandtwin! Wow! I'd kill to go to South Africa.
