Sisters by Amie Denman

As one of four daughters, I think a lot about how being a "sister" has shaped my life. I'm lucky as heck. My sisters and I are all around 50-ish in age, and we're still friends. Lifelong friends. I give my parents a lot of the credit for this. They encouraged us to see the value in befriending someone who always has your back, and they had no patience for silly sibling squabbles. We didn't compete with each other growing up, and we still don't.

For the past five or so years, one of my sisters and I have teamed up to write together. That's May Williams with me above in a 1990 picture and a 2019 picture. I'm the tall goofy one, always have been.

We're both romance writers with similar styles, and we were on a late night Amtrak coming home from BookCon in Chicago when we decided to join forces. Cross-promotion and teaming up is a wise, fun, and profitable choice for authors, and we realized how lucky we were to have the perfect partner. We began with our Grand Hotel series, expanded to a Grand Islander series, and then added a Kenyon Cove series. We're up to a total of eighteen books together and we're planning plenty more.
We recently attended the Romance Writers of America convention in New York City. We shared a hotel room, several beers, and our excitement at being able to pitch our work to wonderful agents and editors. We came home filled with ideas and enthusiasm.

My other family of sisters is right here at Heartwarming. Getting to reconnect and visit with authors is so much fun and so good for the soul. Here I am at the Harlequin party with three other Heartwarming authors Tara Randel, Carol Ross, and Amy Vastine. They are all just as lovely as they look.
It's not always easy being an author, a woman, a wife, a mom, a daughter, and everything else we have to be, but having sisters sure makes life better.

  2. I had two brothers and always wanted a sister, though brothers were great :) just that the bond between sisters can be truly unique. I see it in my two daughters. So wonderful you can share like interests, too. Nice photo from RWA!

  3. Sisters, yes! I grew up with five sisters and a brother. When I saw the picture of May Williamson, I thought it was someone else, a fellow writer. May looked so much like Joanna Shupe they could be sisters. Google Joanna to see.

  4. How wonderful to write with your sister. I have six sisters and three brothers, but the first six we're all girls. There is nothing like being with someone who knows you so well even when you have completely different personalities.

  7. I've written alone and with a collaborator. Both have their joys and their challenges.

  9. What a great post. I never had a sister and I always wanted one. Then I had 2 girls...that rarely get along, which makes me sad. You're so lucky to have such a great relationship with your sister!
