Adventures in Booksigning

Pamela Tracy here, and alas, no, Jack Sparrow did not buy a book from me at the recent Glendale Chocolate Affair where both Kim Watters and I participated in a massive three day signing.

He did, however, strike a pose with us.

Yes, we chased him down - cell phone cameras in hand.

This Jack was awesome.  He stayed in character and we got our picture

Alas, Jack could not be a hero in one of my books.  He'd really, really, REALLY need to be redeemed.  He could be a secondary character though.  He could be a crusty old uncle that only the heroine seems to connect with.  Or, he'd be the one with a secret both the H and H need if this were a suspense.  Or, he could cock his head to the side and say, "Matey, why is it ye haven't said much about a Heartwarming Historical line?  Could be me contacts be keeping things from me."

LOL, can you imagine Jack Sparrow in Heartwarming?  And if so, where?

Go ahead, shiver me timbers with your ideas.

  1. Pam, What a fantastic photo of you and Kim and 'Jack'. Sorry to say he wouldn't fit in my Heartwarming books. But as time goes on, one never knows. Someone could write about theatre, oh where a character gets murdered, and dear Jack could help our brave heroine find the killer, and it leads to Jack and her falling in love. But maybe that's for another line. I hope you sold a lot of books at the Chocolate Affair. I had a couple of email with people asking why I wasn't there this year. It's because we had workshops that our chapter gave at one of our libraries on the same day.

    1. We missed you! It was cold but we had lots of people. I brought four different books and sold out of three of them. Color me happy.

  2. A chocolate affair?! I must be invited :) Pam, I loved your post and photo. Jack is definitely the type of anti-hero that gets a writer's brain firing on all cylinders! I'd love to see him in a Heartwarming... perhaps he's a celebrity impersonator who hasn't believed in his own acting talent enough to step out from under the costume and let the world embrace him as is- maybe the heroine is a playwright or somehow affiliated with movies, plucks him from the "extras" pool when a last minute crisis makes her one actor short of a speaking part on a show. When he becomes so successful on that show, as does the show itself, he becomes an overnight sensation and the type of celebrity the heroine as avoided since a TMZ-style break-up occured with another actor on another show three years ago. She's sworn off actors- if only she'd hadn't already begun falling for this funny, talented, gorgeous man before he hit the big time... Wow that was fun, thanks, Pam!

  3. Pam - I'm probably the only person in the world who doesn't like this series of pirate movies, though I think Johnny Depp is a genius. I remember him saying he found the character in a combination of Keith Richards and Pepe le Pew! And we think writers reach far for characters! I did do a series where three brothers were all at loose ends and had a choice between taking over the winery their uncle left them or resorting to piracy. In the end, they decided learning to make wine was easier than making rum. Fun post, Pam!

    1. I liked the first one, but was ho hum about the others. I've always loved references to Davy Jones' locker.

I'd heard that about Keith Richards too LOL

  4. My first thought was the hero dressing up as Jack Sparrow for a Halloween party. I loooove Halloween and I'd love to read a romance that took place at that time of year and had some fun costume parties and such.

    1. Ruby,
I think you've come up with the perfect idea! And someone could judge him or confide in him based on costume LOL

  5. Oooo, Jack Sparrow. Yummy with a spoon!

Part of me wonders if his character could ever be truly redeemed. What kind of woman could turn this eccentric bad boy into an upstanding citizen? She'd have to be able to see beyond the exterior to the potential beneath. And of course she'd have to be patient with a man who backslides more often than not. Hmmm....

Though Karen's idea does need a second chapter!

  7. Always good to see you, Kim.
So, who do we get our picture taken with next? How about Ironman?

  8. Oh my gosh. I love Jack Sparrow! I'm one of those geeky fans who can quote lines from the first pirate movie! But, the big question. Can Jack be redeemed? Who knows. That's the fun of being a writer. He's such a great bad boy, wouldn't it be fun to try?
