For the love of reading

As I write this, fat fluffy snowflakes fall from the sky and blanket the ground. They're predicting three to six inches by morning. All of this makes me long for a day off of work, a fire in the fire place, a good book and a fabulous cup of coffee.

That's my ideal for reading. However, the truth is that I read in bed, on the couch, at the dining room table, in the car, in the break room at work, in the waiting room, during commercials or while my family watches a show that I'm not into. And it doesn't even have to be a good book. It can be an okay book. Or the back of a box of cereal. All I really need is time.

Ever since I learned to read, it has been my pleasure. My escape. And my education. It has taken me to places I'll never see. Times in history I'll never live. It has opened worlds to me. Opening a book is like having a passport and a time machine. In books, we can fall in love. Avenge our family. Right the injustices of the world. We can be a southern heroine trying to survive the Civil War. A PI tracking down a cheating wife. A queen trying to avoid the guillotine.

As a writer, I hope to do this for my readers.

I love books. I love bookstores and libraries. I love e-readers. My name is Syndi and I'm a bookworm.

  1. Proud bookworm waving back at you, Syndi!! I was late to reading until a friend invited me over for a sleepover then proceeded to read Harlequin Presents all night! I decided to join her (it was my first sleepover and no way was I going home!) and read two books in that one day/night- I didn't sleep a week. I've been addicted to reading- and especially romance- every since!! Thanks for the great post :)

    1. Reading can be so addictive. My mom was the one who pushed books on me. LOL

  2. The best thing for me has been the Nook app for my phone. I have books with me no matter where I am!!!! So much lighter than sticking a book (or two) in my purse. And my daughter and I share an account so that is double the books and I get to try ones I wouldn't normally.

    1. I have one on mine too! I love knowing that if I finish my book on my lunch break, there's a dozen more waiting with the touch of a finger. :)

  3. Oh, and Syn, love the cereal box! I used to pick out cereals for the box rather than the toy!

    1. No kidding! There used to be stories on the back of cereal boxes, and I'd read them while eating breakfast before school. :)

  4. Syndi, Love the cute bookworm and wow am I glad you have those fluffy flakes and I'm finally looking at sunshine again. I'm trying to get a presence on Goodreads and last night made a list of good books I've read over the last few months. I expected it to be difficult, but it was remarkably easy to come up with books I'd give a 4 or 5 rating to. Now if I go to write reviews on them that will take some serious time. But I can go do that later. I finally got out to a bookstore yesterday and bought 5 books by favorite writers. I still don't have a digital reading device and so for me curling up with a good book and hot chocolate means a paperback or hardback book. Much as people say digital is taking over, I hate, hate, hate seeing the slow demise of the paper book.

    1. Hey, Roz! I, too, love paper books. Spent many younger years in the newspaper business. Ink and paper does get into your blood. HOWEVER, when I sold this book, I moved out of my old office so Ron could have it for a studio, and took over my daughter's old bedroom. I'll bet I moved 1,000 books. In the process I kept thinking how great it would have been if all I'd had to do was walk from one room to the other with my Kindle!

    2. I prefer the traditional paper book, but the convenience of the e-readers is nice. I still love the smell of a library or bookstore. The crinkle of the page when you turn it.

  5. Beautifully expressed, Syndi! Most days my adventures would be limited to how far I can walk in a day - or if i can even leave the house that day - but I feel as though my life is rich and exciting because of all the brilliant writers who've gone before us, and all you clever romantics who write today. Thank you for sharing the love and romance in your HEARTWARMING hearts!

    1. Muriel, we only have one life that we can live, but books open up so many lives and worlds. We can be anything in the space of a book, go anywhere. Books are a reason for me to get out of bed sometimes LOL. And I love finding a book that keeps me up all night because I have to find out what happens next. I owe a lot to the writers before us.
