Summertime

With Memorial Day behind us, we have moved into summer. Okay, not officially, but Memorial Day is like the bridge that ushers us into the months of warm temperatures, the kids home from school, and the lazy days of reading begin. Yay!

My favorite memories of summer revolve around reading. As a child, I signed up for the summer reading program at the library. I checked out more books than I could carry, but I had a blast. Worlds I had never imagined opened up to me. Characters made impressions that stay with me even today. The life-long reader in me was hooked.

Later, in high school, I had required reading during the summer. As much as I loved reading, I didn’t necessarily enjoy the book list. I must admit, I like to pick out my own reading choices. Still, I learned a thing or two from the books and got good grades on my reports. When my daughters had required reading in school, I encouraged them to keep up with the book list, but still took them to the library or book store to select their own choices. I’m proud to say I have some well read and intelligent daughters!
As an adult, I still read frequently, but those long days of summer hold special memories. To this day, I love camping out at the beach, soaking up the sun, waves and words on the page of the book I’m reading.

With vacation time around the corner, I hope you get a chance to read some of the books you’ve been collecting. With the new Heartwarming titles available, you can escape into a world of romance for a few hours. As Heartwarming authors, we encourage you to take a peek at our books as they are being released in the upcoming months.

Enjoy! And let us know what you think.

  1. I love summer because, as you mentioned, it's such a great time to catch up on reading. I love reading outdoors and camping is the perfect time to combine both. I think I just realized why so many of my books are set in summer- lol. Thanks for this great post, Tara :)

  2. Tara, I hope I have time to catch up on some reading this summer. I do most of my reading in the winter, because I'm a summer out-doors person. I just ordered the Heartwarming line, so hope my new books start coming soon. I should have done it before. But I get book buildup in my TBR stack and get panicky. Love the post. Have a great day.

  4. Nice post Tara. I'm a winter reader like Roz, mainly because my favorite romances are Christmas themed ones:) . But i definitely do remember reading my summers away as a teenager. My favorite summer romance book as a teen was Malibu Summer, from Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley High series. I think i may read it again while on vacation next month. :)

    1. Jennifer, I read those in high school too though my taste tended to gravitate towards Harlequin LOL. I always wanted to have a life like Jessica, though I was much closer to Elizabeth in personality.

  5. Tara - summer reading IS wonderful! As a young teenager in Southern California, I lived two blocks from the library, which was cleverly built in the middle of a park! I'd make myself a sandwich, check out a book, find a comfortable spot under a tree and read all afternoon. I met Jo March there, of LITTLE WOMEN, CHERRY AMES: STUDENT NURSE, NANCY DREW, and all kinds of other characters who broadened my world and colored my life. And I love summer WRITING! I take my laptop onto the front porch and work for hours. And this summer I painted my blah wicker chair Berry Pink! It's so pretty! However - it's only 59 in Oregon this moprning! You guys in Arizona - shoo the sun my way!

  6. Tara, love this post because it describes me perfectly. In the summer, my mom would tell me to go outside and read at least. She didn't mind the reading part, but she wanted me outside in the summer. I too spent a lot of hours in the library during the summer for the reading program. Then one year, they had a writing program alongside it. I wrote notebooks full of stories that summer. Ahh, summer reading. Bring out the big pile of books and the iced tea!!!
