49 more days! by Syndi Powell

I don't think I've ever looked forward more to the first day of Spring than this year. There's only 49 more days until we reach March 20th, and it couldn't come any sooner!

The warm touch of the sun as it beats down on gardens starting to show signs of life. The scent of dirt after a Spring rain. The chirp of birds in the morning. The first pale green blades of grass pushing up on the lawn. I'm looking forward to all of these.

The poets often wrote about Spring. It's a season of rebirth and renewal. Of hope and resurrection. A young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love. We move from gray, cold days to those filled with bright warmth. While April may have their showers, we know that the pay off is the beautiful flowers in our gardens when we head into May.

So yes, I'm looking forward to Spring. While the colder weather has given me more opportunities to stay inside and enjoy my favorite books, I'm ready to trade in my winter coat for my jean jacket. I'll even welcome the Spring rain if only to splash through the puddles.

What are you looking forward to?

  1. Syndi, I love, love, love tulips (and poetry), so this post brightened my morning :). With yet more snow last night and a 2hr school delay this morning, I'm most definitely counting down the days to the spring equinox! I planted tons of tulip bulbs this past fall and I can't wait to see them pop up. I know the squirrels dug some up and the deer may do damage once they're out...they call it deer candy around here...but I'll be out there with my spray concoction of home-made deer repellent trying to save the flowers ;). I also have tons of daffodil bulbs planted. Fall's my favorite time of year, but I'm a spring baby and so ready for it to arrive!

Oh, and I'm also a bit strange in that I love spring cleaning. Give the house that fresh, new feel :).

    1. Rula, I'm with you on the spring cleaning. I take a week off at the end of April/beginning of May every year to devote to it. I scrub the house from top to bottom, and I love it.

  3. Hi, Syndi! You brightened my morning, too. I love Shelley! Even though we're not in the snow-ravaged part of the country, we're also looking forward to spring. Aging joints long for warm weather, and the soul longs for flowers. Ron's birthday is March 20, so we always celebrate on that day. See, Jen. If you were closer, we could party together!

  4. I feel guilty because for the entire month here in Tucson it's been like spring. We have birds singing and flowers blooming, and alas--weeds coming up in profusion. What we don't have is rain which we need desperately. But all month it's been in the mid to high 70's and today they say maybe 81. I love it and our stores are selling beautiful tulips which I can't resist buying to brighten my kitchen table. But Rula, I'll dodge the spring cleaning. LOL

    1. Roz, I'm jealous of your Spring weather. Today, we had a fire alarm at work and had to stand out in sub-zero temperatures for twenty minutes until we got the all clear to go back inside.

  5. I'm with Roz. We've had spring since Christmas and no one's complaining. I try my best not to mention it when I contact my friends back east. But when you're coming out of an especially cold winter, spring is truly wonderful. When I lived in Connecticut, New Jersey and New Hampshire, I loved when the trees began to leaf and the flowers came up.

    1. Marion, you just described one of my favorite times of the year. Seeing the brown grass turn green and the flowers start to push up through the earth does my soul good just like Muriel said.
