Sweet Sixteen Alpha Versus Beta Bracket by Melinda Curtis

Last year, a certain editor of mine wondered if my hero in Dandelion Wishes was too alpha for sweet readers.  I thought readers would love Will Jackson if he was well motivated.  Why?  Because I believe the alpha hero can cross genres - sweet or steamy.  But what do you say?

I've devised a non-scientific Man Bracket, just like you'd see for March Madness.  I used movie and TV heroes to fill the bracket choices.  Now it's up to you to decide.  There are two brackets - one for fantasy heroes and one for actors in a role.  Choose a winner for each bracket and post your ultimate hero below. Was your man alpha or beta?

Readers who comment will win an autographed copy of either Dandelion Wishes (alpha hero) or Summer Kisses (not-alpha hero).

  1. As a teenager, I was definitely a Luke girl. Now, after watching Star Wars 78 times with my son, I'm a Hans woman. Watching Spiderman with my son also changed my way of thinking. I'm more a Christopher Reeve kind of gal and not a Tobey McGuide girl LOL In the end, I'm Hans and Kirk. Too cool. I love what you did.

  2. How fun! I'm a Han Solo and Matt Damon girl. (Really, Jason Bourne. Love those books.) Interesting way to to get into characterization. I love alpha heroes and liked Will in Dandelion Wishes. For me, alpha's put the spark in the relationship.

  3. I'm a Han Solo girl too. Always have been, always will. LOL

  4. Ha! For me it was Captain Kirk up against Matt Damon. It sounds like a lot of alpha, at least by our sweet authors.

  5. So much fun! As soon as I see Han Solo on a list, I'm done. It's all over. Not even Sherlock or Watson stand a chance, although I'm deeply in television love with both in the current Sherlock version. Martin Freeman as Watson's beta with serious alpha possibilities is the best, but nothing beats Han's arrogant charm.

  8. Am I the only one to choose Spider-Man?? I am ashamed to admit that I didn't know enough of the others besides Superman to choose another for the fantasy bracket. So I had to go with Spider-Man.
Matt Damon for actor in a role. You have to love Matt. I loved his Bourne movies, but loved him even more in The Legend of Baggar Vance. That probably qualifies me as a beta gal I guess. This was fun!! Thanks.

  9. Han Solo vs Matt Damon as Jason Bourn…do I really have to choose between these two? Can't I please keep them both!?!

    Sigh…if I must chose…the winner has to be…Han Solo!

This was a fun activity! Thanks!!

  11. Mel, Sorry to be so late in checking in, but I'm deep in revisions that I'm trying to get finished before my kids descend on winter break. I love the brackets, but I can only vote for Matt Damon and Shia Labeouf. I liked everyone in Star Wars.

  13. I was Hans Solo vs Matt Damon...but I had a hard time picking between Hans, Spider man, and Spock. Ultimately, a real toss up between Hans and Spidey. I think I'm a 50/50 on the alpha/beta. But I totally love Matt Damon from his more 'Bourne' alpha roles to his more beta roles like 'We Bought a Zoo'.

  14. It's all about Hans Solo! What a sexy alpha- mostly because he can take charge and make me laugh!

  15. Han Solo is a hard man to beat. I'm going to have to do this again with a new list.
