Valentine Expectations by Tara Randel

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. A special day, full of romance, love and promises of a lifetime together. So what happens when you’ve been married for twenty plus years and can’t come up with a new gift idea? Is the magic gone? Or what about the couple who does it up big every year? How do they keep ideas for the day so fresh?

I don’t know about you, but Valentine’s Day always causes a major dilemma for me. I never know what to get my husband. He’s not picky, but he’s not helpful when it comes to good ideas. And as much as much as I love my husband, he’s not the most romantic guy when it comes to picking out gifts. So this poses a problem for him too.

If you have a hubby who has stayed by your side through the good times and bad, I’d say you struck gold right there. If the worst thing that happens is that my hubby can’t come up with a gift, then I’d say I’m a pretty lucky girl. He’s been there for me in all the ways that count, encouraging me to take chances I’d never have risked on my own. Despite the daunting task of the day, true love is all about working together to keep a family intact, sitting by a sick child’s bedside or supporting each other with job issues. Love conquers all.

Valentine’s Day can run the gamut of a special night out for dinner, a dozen roses, or simply a card. Because at its core, the day is about love delivered in your own special way. It’s about remembering why we fell in love in the first place.

I’d love to hear some of your Valentine Day stories. It might give some ideas to surprise hubby with something new!

  1. Yep, love conquers all---even without a Valentiine's card, chocolates or flowers! I used to bake heart-shaped pizza for dinner (to thrill the children) and decorate the table with candy and little hearts. Now my empty nest husband and I just give each other an extra hug. :)

  2. Great post. I give my sweetheart a card and cook dinner for him. And when I'm on deadline like this year--that's a sacrifice. lol

  3. My man proposed to me on Valentine's Day. (swoon)

  4. Our gifts to each other are never expensive things. Ron has always been great about tracking down my favorite tea, or chocolates. (Chocolates aren't hard - I love them all!) Since he's been unable to get around on his own, he sends our neighbor and his good friend shopping for him. He loves typical guy things - ribs, potato salad, beans - which are usually not on his diet. But I fix them for special occasions. (Actually, I buy Tony Roma ribs at the market.) We sit together under a blanket and watch TV, the dog at our feet and the cats piled on top. Life is good.

  5. I don't think I have any real stories. I remember that I proposed to my husband in February, but I don't remember the date. (He'd asked once, I said no, then I was scared he wouldn't ask again so I did. He said yes.)

  6. Sometimes we exchange gifts, sometimes we don't. Last year I gave my husband red roses--because guys like flowers too. At least he does, and I like that about him. Loved your story, Liz, about the proposal. Good luck, Patricia, with your deadline. Great post, Tara. I'm remembering an article or book about how people express love: some do so with touch, others with words, still others by doing something for someone else, etc., which I guess would include gift giving.
