Bucket List by Syndi Powell

There's a lot of talk about bucket lists, those things you want to do before you die. I never really thought about mine until I was recovering from my double mastectomy. And instead of things I want to do before I die, I prefaced mine with "When I get better, I'm going to..."

So here's my list of what I'm going to do when I get beat cancer and have a healthy body:

1. Keep my body healthy. Although I've started this already, it means eating more fruits and vegetables and less sugar and fat; exercising more; and keeping up on my own well-being. No one else will take care of my body like I can, so it's time I started doing it.

2. Take some dance lessons. I'm a huge fan of Dancing with the Stars, and I've wanted to learn how to samba, cha cha and rumba. This has been on my list of "someday" for a while.

3. Go to Vegas. My ex-husband and I always talked about going, but it was all talk. I'm ready to stop talking and actually book the trip once my body has healed.

4. Throw myself a party. I want to celebrate that I'm staring cancer in the face and beating it. I'll invite my family and friends, serve food and drinks, play music, dance, laugh... I can't wait.

5. Find my own house. It's time that I move into my place since I'll be able to take care of myself once again. I'm looking forward to the search as well as the end result.

6. Buy a new wardrobe. There have been changes in my body that signal a need for this. I want to infuse my closet with lots of bright, fun colors.

7. Join a gym. While I was recovering, my sister joined a gym and raved about all the great programs they offer as well as the equipment and pool. I figure doing this helps with #1 and makes the need for #6 even better.

8. Laugh more. Love more. Live more. Because if we don't do these things, then what's the point?

So there's my list. What's on your bucket list?

  1. Nice list. I haven't put together a bucket list, but I would like to visit the English countryside. I want to stay in a thatched roof cottage while watching the wildflowers sway in the gentle breeze outside. I want to visit a tearoom and sip English Breakfast by the fireplace while chatting with my husband about the people and things I love. Other than that I want to appreciate each day by not taking for granted the birds singing, the sun shining, the trees blooming, the measure of health I do have, my family and friends and whatever other blessings that come with living on this planet. I'm so glad you're on the road to recovery and realizing your dreams. ( :

  2. Move over! I haven't had the traumatic time you've had over this past year, but I love doing things instead of thinking about them! Good heart and health to you, and have fun with every single item.

  3. Syndi, I'm so happy to see you are doing well and thinking ahead to all of the great items you have on your list. I'm sure I should have a bucket list at my age. But I don't. I've always been a take-one-day-at-a-time person. I'll have to give it thought. I do like your idea of getting more color in your life.

  4. Syndi, I think about you all the time and am so glad to hear you're standing strong. Whether you realize it or not, you inspire me. I love your bucket list and I think we should all include the wise things you have on it. I'm determined to grow healthier as I age, rather than the reverse. By the way, I love Dancing with the Stars too :).

  5. Syndi, so glad to hear you're getting better and have made such a great list. #1 is always on my own list but I tend to forget about it the minute I see a piece of pie. I hope you soon party in Vegas while wearing those gorgeous new clothes!

  6. Syndi, you are such an inspiration to me. I can't wait to hear how you do all the things on your list! Be sure and join that gym--it is such a mood elevator. I do water aerobics three times a week and Pilates twice--you might think about Pilates. It's a great core strengthener to go with that great inner/spiritual core you have.

  7. Syndi! I want to go wardrobe shopping with you. Everything I own is a bright color because Oregon is usually gloomy several months out of the year and the colors really do help. I'd love to go to Vegas with you, too. I might have to sit out the gym - or do the treadmill while you try all the other stuff. So glad you're doing well. With such an attitude, I'm sure perfect health is just around the corner.

  8. First of all, Syndi, my prayers go with you as you battle the C-beast. I admire your courage, strength, and pluck!

As for my bucket list? Not a whole bunch of things left to cross off:

    1.) Return to Ireland
2.) Go from there to Scotland
3.) Stick to my Weight Watchers routines so I'll be around to enjoy the grandorables and THEIR grandorables.
4.) Learn how to make gnocchi exactly like my nonna used to make it.
5.) Find a way to get ahead of the game on housework, yardwork, and deadlines so I can enjoy goofing off!

Wishing you much luck as you cross all those items off your list! Have a grand week, m'dear!

  11. Syndi, Your fighter spirit shows through in every word you write! I've gone through a couple bucket lists--though mine weren't much different---survive illnesses and bad times, betrayals and keep my chin up; just put one foot in front of another most days. You are a blessed woman. KEEP at it!. And as for Vegas? Make that trip. You deserve it.
