Friday the 13th and Thanksgiving in the Same Month? (with recipes) | by Loree Lough & Cerella Sechrist

Friday the 13th and Thanksgiving in the same month? “We Talk to Ourselves...a Lot!”(Loree Lough & Cerella Sechrist), and we think that’s a good thing!

Watch out! It’s Friday the 13th, the unluckiest day of the year! Or is it?

According to numerous studies, approximately 20 million people suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia (from Frigga, Norse goddess for whom Friday is named, and triskaidekaphobia, fear of the number 13). True sufferers—paralyzed with fear—will actually take to their beds on Friday the 13th.

When the whole “Friday the 13th is unlucky” notion began isn’t clear, but superstitions linked to the number 13 date back to the 1690s. 13’s bad rap is the reason many cities don’t have a 13th Street or 13th Avenue. Why would 13 appear on an elevator panel when so few buildings have a 13th floor? Airports rarely have a gate 13, and you’ll be hard-pressed to check into a room with a 13 in it at hotels and hospitals.

Breathe easy, dear friends, because for every “Friday the 13th is unlucky” study, there’s another to refute it: One insurance corporation reports fewer accident, fire, and theft claims on Friday the 13th than on “normal” Fridays; their major competitor says there are more. One thing is certain… The date will inevitably inspire folks to cite their favorite Friday the 13th “ifs”:

· If a ship sets set sail on Friday the 13th it will encounter bad weather, and if you start a trip on Friday the 13th, well, y’know....

· If you break a mirror on Friday the 13th, start planning for 7 years of bad luck.

· And if you cut your hair on Friday the 13th, a loved one will soon die.

· If a funeral procession passes you on Friday the 13th, you’ll be the next to die.

· Our favorite? If a child is born on the 13th, it will live a life filled with misfortune and misery. The 13th—Loree's birth day—has always been a very lucky number for her! And Cerella agrees! Her mom's birthday also falls on the 13th, and it's been a "lucky number" in more ways than one!

Here’s our proof that Friday the 13th is lucky: We’re each going to share a family favorite Thanksgiving dinner side dish and dessert with you:

  2. Loree,
Was the photo on the recipe a before picture or an after. I think I could actually make this one (I'm not a cook!)

I've a nephew-in-law born on the 13th. He seems pretty lucky.

Better yet, I got married on the 13th LOL, and yes the choice of day did occur to me but I paid no attention until you reminded me just now and then I had to go check to see which date I got married.

    Gun post Loree and Cerella

  3. Thank you for another fun post, Loree and Cerella. Your post reminds me that in Ontario there is a very popular motorcycle ride to Port Dover: http://www.pd13.com/ (Yes, it occurs even in the winter, although the number of participants is much smaller.)

Clearly the hundreds (thousands?) who participate in this ride aren't superstitious!

    1. I'll have to pass that information to my Harley-riding friends, Kate! I'm sure they'll agree...it doesn't matter a whit that this '13' event takes place in the wintertime!

Have a terrific weekend, dear lady!

    2. Such brave souls, Kate! I can't believe how many people participate in that motorcycle ride!

  4. The photo is 'before,' Pam. You absolutely can make this super-easy recipe, and you'll love watching everyone smile as they cut into their very own little stuffing muffin!

13 is a great, strong number, and it's always a treat when donut sellers and steamed-crab makers add one to the batch, giving us a baker's dozen! I think that's proof enough that people born on the 13th (and married on that date!) give a little extra to everything they do!

Wishing you a fun and relaxing weekend!

  5. I had no idea there were so many superstitious beliefs related to Friday the 13th. Well, you both blow the myth of birthdays on the 13th. These are crazy.
Thanks for the recipes, they both sound yummy...and easy!

  6. I forgot it was Friday the 13th until you ladies reminded me. Now should I go grocery shopping today as planned, or go back to bed and forget it? Ha Ha. I grew up with a mother who was superstitious about everything you hear attached to black cats, ladders, mirrors, Friday 13th and I'm sure there were others. Sending good wishes to everyone for a happy day. Thanks for the cool recipes.

    2. I've known people like that, too, Roz! Some were--like Cerella's aunt--very sweet and well-meaning. Others were anything but, and drove everyone bonkers! LOL

    2. For most of the world, it truly is just another day. I feel sorry for anyone who believes all the bad hype about the 13th.

Glad you enjoyed all the silliness, Sophia, and hope your weekend is wonderful!

  8. You two are always a wonderful way to start the day. We have a lottery ticket that will be drawn today, and the power # attached to it is also 13 - we're determined to make it lucky. Love the idea of stuffing muffins, and truffles of any kind (except the ones pigs dig up) are aces with me. Love to both of you, and all our other sisters on the blog!

  9. This post is right up my alley, Ladies. Love this bout of history about Friday the 13th. My oldest sister was born on Friday the 13th and she's had (has) an amazing life. She's one of the happiest, genuinely kind people I've ever known. Recipes look amazing! Thank you for another great post.
