Oh, Baby

by Lee McKenzie

Everyone who knows me knows I love Christmas. It's hands-down my favorite time of year. This Christmas was extra-special because my son and his wife gave me the most precious gift of all.

My new favorite hashtag!

My first grandchild will be welcomed to our family this summer and there are no words to tell you how thrilled we are.

I am, of course, already shopping for books. One of my favorites so far is Little Owl's Night by Divya Srinivasan. I can't wait to check out more children's books by this author.

A charming twist on the traditional bedtime book.
This new addition also gives me an opportunity to peruse my favorite vintage shops for great finds, like this Royal Doulton Bunnykins money bank.

College fund!
I'm also looking forward to a DIY project (or two!) for the nursery, so stay tuned for photos of those in future posts. The first will be a refresh of the cradle my son slept in, and I can't wait to get started.

To celebrate this most wonderful news, I have a giveaway! For a chance to win a Magnolia Bakery shopping bag (yes, from that oh-so-famous NYC cupcakery) and a signed copy of The Parent Trap, leave a comment and tell me abut your best Christmas present ever, or your resolutions for 2016, or just say hello!

I’ll make a raellndom drawing on Friday, January 29th and post the winner’s name here in the comments and in my February newsletter. If you would like to subscribe to my monthly newsletter, please click here.

Until next time, happy 2016 and happy reading!

warmest,
Lee

  2. Hi Lee! Congratulations! I became a first time grandma in August and I never imagined how much joy it would bring me. Everyone said being a grandma is completely different but I had no idea! Can't wait to see your future DIY projects. I'm not crafty at all so I'm hoping for some good ideas. ;)

  3. Congratulations, Lee! What a present! I love seeing your projects, too. When I was visiting my son and daughter-in-law in Vermont about twelve years and seven months ago, I was standing and looking at the new built-in bookcases they'd placed in their living room. There among the row of framed photographs of their nieces and nephews was an ultrasound. This was how they told me they were having their first baby. I hadn't thought they were going to have any, so it was a special thrill.

  4. A first grandchild – how wonderful! My daughter told me one Christmas, seventeen years ago, she and her husband were expecting. It’s a wonderful gift. And I love your pictures.

    1. Marion, this is a first grandchild for both sets of grandparents as well as one set of great grandparents. Not to mention three first-time aunts. This will be one very doted-upon baby.

  6. Congratulations, Grandma. My favorite Christmases were when the kids were still small enough to jump out of bed and race into the living room to see what Santa brought them. It won't be long and you'll get to experience that once again.

  7. Lee - how totally wonderful! Congratulations! Love your photos, too, and anxious to see what your brilliant DIY self comes up with for the nursery. You have to get a copy of "Good Night Moon," and, for a little later, "Stella Luna," about a baby bat who gets lost in a storm and is taken in by a family of birds. Soon she has all the birds hanging upside down from a branch - and the lesson is that, though we're all different, we all have things to teach each other. I'm so happy for you!

    1. Muriel, I still have copy of Goodnight Moon from when my kids were little. It was a favorite, for sure. I'll look for Stella Luna, though. That one's new to me.

  8. Congrats Lee on the grandchild. I'm sure you will be a wonderful "granny." Don't enter my name in your contest because I'm going to buy your book, but my best Christmas present ever was a 1950s Coca Cola machine that took nickles and still worked. I love it!

  9. Lee,
How wonderful and exciting. Muriel recommended Good Night Moon which is what I was going to do. I still can't resist kids books and my youngest grand-twins graduate from high school this year. Now they read the same books I do, and recommend some they think I'd like. So the fun times stay around for a long time. Enjoy every minute.

    1. I kept a lot of my kid's favorite books, Roz, so this baby will be starting off with a much-loved library of his or her own. As we all know, there can never be too many books!

  10. Congratulations Lee! Please don't enter me into your contest because I'll get your book anyway. Just wanted to wish you joy and can't wait to see the baby things you buy/make.

  11. Congratulations. I'm going to be a great-grandmother in April, I still can't believe it. My 20 year old step-granddaughter is due on the 27th with a little girl. My 39 year old daughter keeps telling me she's to young to be a grandmother, I just laugh. I'm 63 so I don't mind being a great grandma. I just keep telling my grandkids that they can't call me granny, that was my grandmother. It's been a while since we've had a baby in the family so it will be fun. My youngest grandchild is 5 and started school this year. You will love being a grandmother.
