Waiting for Baby

by Lee McKenzie

If you're a regular blog reader, you might remember my Oh, Baby post in January when I shared the happy news that I'm going to be a grandmother.

My favorite hashtag!
While we're waiting for baby, my daughter (#auntie) and I have been scouring thrift shops and we have already scored some fabulous finds.

Nine onsies for $1 each
Footed PJs for $3, jeggings (so cute!) for $2, another onesie (with original tags for $2
Striped sundress for $6, denim overall skirt for $5
All of these items are in excellent condition, several still have the original store tags attached, and all for $27.

My other new favorite pastime is browsing the bookstores for children's books.

Because it's not possible for a child to have too many books, right?
What are you favorite children's books? Please share them in a comment, because although baby's library is off to a great start, I'm on the lookout for more.

For this month's giveaway, I have a lovely Skye McGhie "Cream Lace" cup and sauce, an assortment of organic herbal and green teas, and a signed copy of one of my backlist books.

For a chance to win, simply post a comment on this post. This Friday, March 25, I'll make a random draw and post the winner's names here on the blog. To help me contact you, feel free to include your email address (i.e., name at serviceprovider dot com).

I'm also excited to share the cover for To Catch a Wife. This is the first book in The Finnegan Sisters trilogy and will be released in May.

What do you think? I'm thrilled that it's so pretty and so very romantic!

Happy reading!

Until next time,

Lee...writing fifty shades of pink

  1. Those are truly great finds. I love the little red and white dress.
I loved the Berenstain Bears books - pretty much all of them. They also had a t.v. show, and the episodes are free on YouTube, the last time I looked anyway. The cover for your May release is amazing!! I will be looking out for it in WalMart in June. ( :

  2. Laurie, we love the little red-and-white striped dress! I couldn't manage a photo that showed the crisscross back. So sweet! It's a size 2, so she'll be walking by the time it fits.

Thank you for reminding me about the Berenstain Bears. My kids read those when they were little. I'll definitely add those to my book list.

It's so exciting that Heartwarmings are in WalMart now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that WalMart stores in Canada will start stocking them as well.

  3. So many cute outfits at such wonderful prices. I recommend all of the Dr. Seuss books. You can find lots of them at garage sales.

  4. Oh yes, Lee, I remember your post very well...so exciting! Excellent finds...I love the striped sundress. I always loved the Little Golden Books.

  6. Lee! Congratulations on your wonderful bargain shopping! Is anything more fun or more satisfying? Don't forget shoes! A girl needs shoes! I also loved Golden Books. My favorite was Samantha and the Rain - I've talked about this before. Sorry I'm repeating. It's about a girl's beautifully coordinated rain outfit because I had ugly, serviceable rain clothes. Also - for a little older child, Stella Luna, about a baby bat lost in a storm and taken in by a family of birds. It was an award winner and totally charming. I'm so happy for your! And I'd love to have tea in that beautiful cup and saucer.

    1. LOL, Muriel! We will be on the lookout for shoes, for sure! And I'm so glad I did this post for the blog. Everyone's suggestions are coming together to create one amazing book list.

  7. My girls and my grands all have had so many great books bought by gram and gramps that I can't even name a favorite. We subscribed to Dr. Seuss and the two-in-one books for my girls, then passed them on to kids they baby-sat. Now my RWA chapter collects children's books all year, and at Christmas we give them to two of our members who work with disadvantaged children. Lee, love your clothing finds. And looking forward to the book.

    1. Roz, I still have a box of my kids' favorite books, but many of them were read so many times that they fell apart. I love the idea of collecting books for disadvantaged children. What a wonderful gift.

  8. My baby granddaughter will be 20 on Sunday--I could just smack her for growing up so fast. We still have Dr. Seuss books around. With the grandkids' books, I've looked more at the illustrations than the books themselves--they're beautiful!

    1. Grown up already? How dare she? LOL! Yes, Liz, Dr. Seuss is a must for every child's library.

  9. Congratulations, Lee! Those are some excellent finds. I recently became a great aunt for the first time, and love, love, love having a baby in the family again. I highly recommend all the books by Sandra Boynton. Kids adore the illustrations and the rhyming. And they are so much fun to read aloud!

  10. Such fun shopping thrift stores for baby and children's clothes and books. Since my son is 20 and not going to be a dad anytime soon (phew!) my current go-to section in our thrift store (Pearl's - love the name!) is the housewares, teacup and coffee mug shelf! Who agrees that having 18 mismatched teacups and coffee mugs is way better than having a set?

    1. Donna, I would definitely shop at thrift store named Pearl's! I adore old china and I love the look of a tea table set with mismatched cups and saucers. So quaint and charming.

  11. What a great wardrobe and library! You're the queen of bargain finds. I always loved Millions of Cats, and a favorite of my children was called Spaghetti Day, which also involved cats. (And here I thought I was a dog person).
That is a beautiful cover on your new book - so nostalgic and sweet.

    1. Beth, thanks for stopping by today. The clothes are all thrift store finds, but the books are new, with the exception of the Beatrix Potter treasury. It's in perfect condition and I only paid 99 cents for it!

  12. Love shopping for babies - especially clothes shopping for baby girls! You must find the book Guess How Much I Love You. It's my favorite and I get choked up every time I read it. My kids also loved anything by Sandra Boyton. And love your new book cover! Soon, your granddaughter will be reading that ;)

    1. Amy, I don't think I've seen a Heartwarming cover I didn't love. Harlequin creates beautiful covers that really do our stories justice. That said, I'm in no hurry for my granddaughter to read them because that'll mean she's growing up too quickly.

  13. Great finds, Lee! We used to swap baby clothes around with others - someone had just had a baby and needed clothes, others had 3 year olds and weren't having more. Lots of fun finds. Occasionally as a grandmother, I'd need to go buy a fancy-dancy/extra-special "grandmother" outfit for the girls and one boy in my group of 6 grandchildren!
Books - every one of my 4 kids and all grandkids get books for birthdays, Christmas, and any un-birthday day I feel like gifting them one! I loved reading out the Ant & Bee collection to my kids although it's hard to find any now. Loved biggish books that had rhymes so we could sing-song them along together - Dr. Suess books were perfect; Horton Hatches an Egg is still my favourite one to read!
Have fun. Love the first cover of your upcoming series - very romantic!

  15. Aw,such sweet dresses and onesies! You must be having the time of your life. My all-time favourite children's book is Winnie the Pooh (the original, not the Disney version). Also love all the Beatrix Potter books.
