I Can't Write or Read...

by Shirley Hailstock

I can't write or read. The 2016 Olympics in Rio started a week ago and I've been virtually riveted to the television screen since. There are few times in the world when everything is put aside and the world focuses on the best athletes from their countries as they vie for a gold medal. This is happening in Rio de Janeiro at this very moment.

There are the favorites, those expected to win, like Simone Biles and Amy Raisman.

And as expected the two Americans took the Gold and Silver medals in gymnastics.  But what about the fantastic run of Argentinian Juan Martin Del Portro in the tennis matches?  He certainly gives us fodder for stories.  The underdog hero who pushes past all obstacles to get his lady (a gold medal). He came away with the silver, but he fought the hard fight (and he looks good too).

Tall, good looking and in excellent form, he could grace the cover of any romance novel.

Simone Manuel took home a handful of medals, and set a new world record in the 100 meter swimming freestyle competition.  The look on her face when she saw the scores was priceless.

This blog could go on as long as the Olympics, but no story on the Olympics would be complete without knowing Michael Phelps was standing front and center accepting his gold medals. He won five gold and one silver as this count.  Go Michael!

In the next few days the stage will reset to normal and I'll be back at the keyboard pounding out my next story.  In the meantime if you have Olympic fever and need a novel, check out More Than Gold. It's a romantic suspense with characters a lot like Simone Biles and Amy Raisman. And of course, the hero is to die for...

As always, keep reading...

  1. The Olympics have been going strong at our house, too. I'm not a watcher, but my husband has drawn me in to some events. They are definitely inspiring!

  2. Somehow I managed to marry a non-sports watcher, but thankfully he doesn't complain about my viewing habits during the Olympics:) I also get to watch the Super Bowl and any games when The Colts are playing:)

  3. I have to give a shout-out to all the terrific Canadian athletes competing in the Olympics!! (I'm still astounded that a person can clear over eight feet in a high jump!)

  4. Ditto what Liz said. It's my husband who puts on the Olympics and then I get drawn in. I loved watching Simone Biles and Aly Raisman though because I enjoy the gymnastics floor exercises.

  6. I'll be sorry to have the Olympics end, because then TV will be back to endless politics that is so depressing and obnoxious. Surely there is other news. Of course I can spend my free time writing. Now there's a novel concept. Love the book cover and title Shirley.

  7. Great to start the day with all those great photos of people who've achieved their dreams - in their teens, 20s and 30s! Next to a smile that says, "I'm loved," the smile that said, "I did it!" has to be the most beautiful. Congratulations on your new book, Shirley. Really great cover. Happy weekend, everybody!

  8. I'm with you, Shirley. I love the Olympics and get hooked on watching. Like you, I find those underdog stories so inspiring. You can just see all those years of hard work paying off. And then, I also love the athletes like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt that somehow are able to keep winning over and over again. I'll be truly disappointed when it's over.

  9. I'm conflicted on the Olympics ending. I want it to, so I can go back to my normal writing life. I don't want it too, because it's so inspiring. I love all the games, even sports I have no interest in, I watch. I loved the Dressage and watched, even though I've only seen it in movies. The horses were beautiful as were the outfits worn by the riders. Looking forward to the closing ceremony. I'm expecting spectacular.

  10. I'm loving watching the Olympic, too. My granddaughter aspires to ride in the equestrian events one day in dressage. And now I'm off to get your book!
