Sit-down Saturday with Kate James (Sanctuary Cove)

Welcome to Sit-down Saturday! Today we’re celebrating the release of Sanctuary Cove with Kate James.

Congratulations on the release of Sanctuary Cove, Kate! Can you tell us a little about the book?

I'm happy to do it!

New York based communications executive Emma Meadows never imagined that sticking to her principles against an act of corruption would cost her her job and her relationship. Heartbroken, she retreats to her lakefront cabin in the Adirondack Mountains. Aiding an injured animal at the side of a rain-drenched road, she meets local veterinarian Joshua Whitmore. Gradually, Josh’s charm and persistence overcome her defenses. But when Emma’s past abruptly intrudes—putting reputations and even lives at stake—it threatens everything she and Josh have begun to build together.

What was your inspiration for this story?

The idea for this story has been around for a while. I was exposed to an incident of corruption early in my business career, and no amount of pressure could cause me to compromise my integrity and principles. Whatever else happened, I had to be able to go home at the end of the day, look myself in the mirror, and know I had done the right thing. There’s an underlying message in Sanctuary Cove which I truly believe in, that if you do the right thing, the right things will (eventually) happen. The incident I mentioned above inspired me, and I wanted to write the story of a young woman principled enough not to compromise her ethics or integrity, despite the personal cost. Of course, it’s still a romance and Emma and Josh (as well as their dogs) find their HEA!

You have not one, not two, but three dog characters in this book! Are the dogs entirely fictitious or are they modeled after one of your own dogs?

I do tend to have furry, four-legged characters in my books, who often play key parts in the plot and/or with respect to bringing the hero and heroine together, and Sanctuary Cove is no exception. I do both—pick a breed that seems to suit the role the dog plays or fictionalize a pet I’ve had. In Sanctuary Cove, Theo is entirely fictitious, while Max and Winston are based on two of our previous pups, Casper and Buster, respectively. Here’s a fun post I wrote some time ago, about how I had to rewrite portions of a story when the book’s cover ended up with an entirely different breed of dog.

What's next for you?

In addition to Sanctuary Cove, I will have two more releases this year. Home to Stay, the fourth book in the San Diego K-9 Unit series releases on July 1st and is available for preorder nowA Priceless Find, a sequel to A Child’s Christmas, will be released on October 1st.

  5. Kate! I was floored when I read that you went through this yourself! As you know I'm reading this fabulous book, which in my opinion is the kind of story line that most of us find in a hardback, and now as I finish the story, I'll be thinking of what you sacrificed. I also agree with you. There are times in your career when you know going in that to do the right thing is going to cost---big time, but you do it anyway. Sometimes, it takes decades to shake out, but the right thing really does reveal it's presence in our lives every minute of every day when we look in the mirror and see our reflection.
You are a woman of honor in addition to being multi-multi talented.

    1. Oh, oh . . . I should have clarified that while I stuck to my principles, I didn't lose the job or a guy! (And I never dated a guy like the one Emma was engaged to.) I did have my cottage at that time though!

Thank you for the kind words about the book. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
