Who Are You?

Pamela Tracy here.

Because I'm not busy enough <cough, cough>, this summer I also took a 500 level class in grammar.   I finished the class the same day I finished revisions on my November Heartwarming and one day before my family left for California and vacation.

One of my assignments was to write an "I Am" poem.  There was an example provided and then I had to change it to fit me.

So, I've put my poem below, and now I'm looking forward to reading your "I Am" poems.  Go ahead, see what you come up with and post it in the comment section.

"I Am"poem
I am competent and self-motivated, taking responsibility and sometimes doing what’s expected to such a degree that I miss the scenery because I’m too busy driving.

I am a cactus, standing tall, many arms, don’t touch me but I’ll shelter you.

I am a church, open door, messy lives but giving nature.  Ask and you shall receive, knock and the door will open, but I might grumble about it.

I am a parrot, smart, strong, but demanding attention and squawking if you don’t give me what I expect/deserve.

I am the only child, self centered, center of attention, believing I can do anything and you’ll applaud.

I am the camper in the woods, supposed to have the bare essentials but instead the surprise is inside - television, shower, microwave - powered by the generator of heart.

I am the octopus, too many arms, going too many directions until I want to hide my head in the sand and go unnoticed - but if I go unnoticed, I will rise up and squirt ink at you!

I am wife and mother

I am teacher and writer

I am Christian

I am Pamela

I am me
I'm not changing my poem because it's the one I turned in.
But, I am also friend.
Here I am during my college days with my friend Kelly.
<sigh> I wish I still had those legs.
I especially wish I still had those knees!

  1. Thank you for sharing your poem, Pamela. I enjoyed learning more about you and how you see yourself. I also love the playful picture of you in college.

Your poem did get me thinking about what I would write about myself. If I come up with anything worthy, I'll post a comment again later!

    1. I look forward to reading it, Kate. It's a bit humbling when you open your soul. Most people who meeting me correctly identify (she's an only child). LOL

    2. I'm an only child, too, but having spent a bit of time with you in San Diego, I didn't sense that in you! :)

  2. Thank you for sharing that. It's lovely. I'd love (and need) to take a grammar class. I have written an "I Am" poem, too (not that I'm avoiding edits or anything) and I've borrowed your form because yours was wonderful.

I am the result of 66 years of getting to know me.
    I am a secret-keeper—yours, not mine.
I am the one who says, Yes, I can do that, because even if I’m too busy I lose more by saying No than I gain.
I am a person who likes attention but has no problem sharing it. I’d rather be part of the chorus line than a soloist.
I am a sewist and a quilter because I like to make things to keep others warm.
The best part of me—I believe—is that I am non-judgmental. The worst part is that I can get my feelings hurt by a change in the weather.
    I am a wife. A mom. A Nana.
    I am a writer.
    I am a Christian.
I am a happy and loving soul.
    I am Liz.

    1. My favorite line was "I'm a sewist and quilter because I like to make things to keep others warm." But, when I typed sewist the first time, it wanted to spell check it into sexist. LOL.
I can tell you're a wife, mom, nana, writer, Christian keeping others warm from your books :)

  3. Pam, I love it. I can see you in most of the stanzas, but not the cactus one. I've never seen you prickly, and you always give of yourself unselfishly. My poem would be very short I think.
I am a person who has spent my whole life trying to reach self-actualization.
I fall short in too many ways.
I still try and will never give up.
    I am a humanitarian.
    I am Roz

    1. Roz and I have been friends for more than 20 years. There's not been a year when I've not seen here. When I travel 100 miles from home, I stay at her house. I don't think you ever fall short. I can remember you guiding me when I was way too judgmental. You did it in the best way.
And, the older I get, the more of a cactus I become LOL

    2. Let me add to that, Roz, that you are one of the sweetest people I know!

  4. HI Pamela, Always enjoy your posts. And your sense of humor. I'm like Roz, I don't ever see the prickly Pam. You are so giving. I'm off to several events today so won't take time to write a poem. I guess I could say I am always too busy. (hmmm is that a workaholic?) LOL

  5. Loved learning more about you, Pam. Like Kate, I'll try to post something later, but it's something to think about. And an idea for a blog post...

    1. Patricia, I will look back.
My son and I took a road trip this weekend, leaving hubby behind. Right now we are in beautiful Colorado staying with my niece. This morning, we went to a pool; this afternoon we'll go see the new Cars movie. I love traveling with my 12 year old.

  6. A fun, revealing post! Here's one verse: I am a kettle: cold, warming, boiling--too hot to handle for some, a strong cuppa for others--and then a slow return to calm.

  7. Hi Pamela! I'm stopping in from a writing sprint to wave and say hi. I love the poem and don't think you're prickly at all. :) If I hit my word count I'll swing back in and try to come up with a clever poem.

  8. Pamela, I love that poem. Today I am a hummingbird in a room full of silk flowers, flitting from here to there, accomplishing nothing.

  9. Hummingbirds are the most beautiful of birds. They bring joy and color to the world. So, you are joy and color.
