Kites on the Beach by T.R. McClure

For a  milestone birthday a couple years ago, my husband and I spent four days in Bermuda. The birthday coincided with the Easter weekend, when the locals fly kites at Horseshoe Bay.

After being greeted with a rum swizzle cocktail and a good night's sleep, we found our way via the local bus system to the beach on Good Friday.

Adults and children lined the beach, some with kites, some relaxing on the warm sand and taking in the colorful sights. Food stands offered cod cakes and hot cross buns, traditional Easter weekend foods. The air is mild and the warm sun sparkles on the turquoise waters. Kites of all styles and colors whip in the fresh breeze coming off the ocean.

Known as the Easter Isle from the late 1890's to the early 1960's, Bermuda supplied 90% of the U.S. market of Easter, or Bermuda, lilies. The snow-white trumpet has graced my home every Easter Sunday since I was first married.

This year my birthday falls six days before Easter. With no plans to go south or southeast this year, I am hoping March exits with a warm spring sun.

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Welcome to the first day of Spring and as always, enjoy the read!

  1. I spent a Christmas season holiday in Bermuda once and have never forgotten it. Beautiful place. The buses are a great way to meet local people. What a wonderful birthday you had!

  2. I sighed a little seeing those great Bermuda photos. I only had about four days there, but I loved every minute of it. Rich history, beaches, ferries...the place has it all. What nice birthday memories you have. Thanks for this post.

  3. My husband took me to St Martin for our 20th wedding anniversary. It was supposed to be a "Surprise, pack your bag, we're leaving" thing, but I didn't have a passport, so he had to reveal it several months early. We've had a winter vacation almost every year since, it was so wonderful.

Birthday doesn't work with winter vacations, but anniversary does, and I'll take it.

  4. Never been to Bermuda, but have been to kite festivals in California and Oregon. We even bought those beautiful two-person kites to fly on the Oregon coast. Love the ones set up with motors and pulleys that professional kite flyers fly. In northern CA there were a lot with Asian influence and they were gorgeous.

  5. I've never been to Bermuda either. Why did they change the name from Easter Island? Love the flowers :)

  6. There is certainly something about a kite, isn't there? You notice one flying, and your steps slow and you just start watching its dance. Thanks for the imagery T. R. and Happy Easter!

  9. I've never flown a kite. Like M. K. said, I've stood and watched them floating in the air, but never did it myself. My kids went with other kids and flew them.

  10. T.R., your post was a vivid reminder of the Easter weekend trip my hubby and I made years ago to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. I loved the island because it was small enough to see a lot in 4 days and so beautiful, as you’ve shown in your photos. As to birthdays, they’re always spent casually at our cottage with the family - just the way I like it!
