I'm back.

Where was I? Nowhere, really. I've been spending every day, sitting here at my desk, in front of the computer. I wasn't on social media, though, and I wasn't writing, so anyone looking for proof of my presence may be excused for considering putting out an APB.

I've been trying to wrap up my accounting business. If you haven't been keeping track (and really, it's not your job to do so, is it?) my husband and I are taking a year long sabbatical. For the last few weeks, I've been working to wrap up the business I've had for ten and a half years.

There have been good things about this job - working from home and being my own boss are two excellent things. But closing the books (there's a pun) has been a lot of work - 12 hour days this past week.

It's done. I'm done. When clients ask, I can no longer help them. I have to prepare now for living 9 months on a boat.

And it hit me.

I'm going to be living the next 9 months on a boat.

Have you been in that spot before? When something has been on the horizon but there's been so much right in front of you that you almost forgot it was there? Almost forgot what the purpose for all the busyness was?

So, here's Sayonara. On August 29, we'll sail her south, and for most of the next nine months, this will be my home.

There will be adjustments, going from a two story four bedroom house to a 38 foot sailboat. Some will be good. No more accounting, time to relax and write. Leaving a Canadian winter for a Caribbean one.

Some adjustments I'm not sure of. Going from a two story house to a 38 foot sailboat - I think you can see how that might be...challenging.

My husband and I have lived together, and occasionally worked together (not completely harmoniously those times) but this is going to be...different. Challenging.

You can track us if you wish, on facebook (YachtSayonara - look it up!) and my website (www.kimfindlay.ca). But here on a Monday morning, when getting ourselves vertical can be difficult, I'm wondering - what are your dreams? Have you reached some and found them to be what you hoped? Do you have something on your horizon?

And maybe most importantly - how do you save on space? Because, nine months worth of stuff..38 foot sailboat...

  1. Kim, good luck with your new sailboat adventure. The challenge sounds exciting. Mine is landlocked as I’m currently downsizing to move from a larger to a smaller home way across the country. Love the new house and lifestyle but you know...Happy sailing!

    1. We moved from Winnipeg to Toronto with a five ton truck from a four bedroom home when the kids were 4 and 6, so lots and lots of stuff. I feel you. We've been in this house for ten years, and will probably move next year and I'm so not looking forward to that!

    1. Writing yes, and for blog posts, I'll just snap shots of the nearest beaches to make everyone jealous.

  3. Good thing a Kindle will hold a thousand books LOL. I'm no sure I could do a 38 foot boat, but I could do a 38 foot camper. I'm looking forward to lots of pictures too.

    1. I borrow ebooks from the library, and you can just bet that I'm keeping my library card up to date. Every time we hit internet I'll be downloading...

  4. Well, as I've said here before, I'm thrilled for you. As a former liveaboard sailor, I know heading to the tropics is a grand adventure--not always easy. I can attest to that--and my now-adult kids would second it. But I can honestly say I've never met anyone who regretted this kind of undertaking. The rewards are great! All the best.

    1. Thanks. I at least only have a spouse to entertain, not kids on this trip.

  5. Good luck. I'm going along vicariously. If less than harmony happens, I'll always take your side!

    1. I'm noting you down for support with our first disagreement. You think my taste in music is better, right?

  6. Oh, my goodness! I am so envious of your adventurous spirit! I can't imagine breaking the ties that bind me to my little area. But I will be following you. And speaking of someone issuing an APB...or BOLO as they say now...I had a friend that someone actually had that to happen because she hadn't been on Fb for a month...

    1. I heard that one of the women on the Bachelor not long ago was reported missing while she was on the show since she was out of touch. We are tied to our social media.

  7. Wow. I think is incredibly brave and beyond exciting! I hope you'll keep us posted. I'm going to follow your adventures on Facebook. I would love to do something like this. Probably not a boat, but a really long road trip or backpacking excursion would do. I wish you happy sailing and all the luck!

    1. I've never really thought of myself as the adventurous sort, but somehow I keep agreeing to these things my husband suggests. I guess there's some adventure loving under there somewhere...

    1. I haven't been able to come up with a good sailing story yet, so if this doesn't inspire me, I don't think anything will.

  10. Wow! What an incredible adventure! I am so excited for you. It will be challenging but you will make so many great memories! I'm really excited to hear about your travels. And all I can say about living in a small space is what I learned when I lived on a boat in my twenties. Everything has to have a clearly labeled place, and everything has to be put back in that place, and you have to get used to a very simple wardrobe, and then you will be fine! Wishing you a wonderful journey!
