A Christmas Puzzle by Patricia Forsythe

I know that gremlins and leprechauns are known to cause mischief. And we’re all aware that Elf on the Shelf hides an evil heart beneath that beatific smile. I’m wondering if the two innocent-appearing reindeer pictured above may have crossed over to the dark side. The reason I’m asking is because things have been disappearing around my house ever since I put up my Christmas decorations. It’s true that my decorations this year can only be described as ‘somewhat skimpy’, so it would be noticeable if part of my nativity scene, or my Christmas village had wandered off, but that’s not it.
Food, household items, and even clothing have gone missing. Any item made of chocolate seems to evaporate overnight, as does anything grape-related, i.e. wine. I brought home several pieces of a pumpkin dessert I made for a party and they have vanished, along with two glasses’ worth of wine left in a bottle. Is it possible the two are related?
I checked the reindeer for evidence of either pumpkin or wine, but found nothing. However, these creatures are known to be magical – after all, they’ve got cousins who can fly! – so it’s no surprise that they’re clean.
I also can’t find my Christmas plaid tablecloth that lives eleven months of the year in the bottom of the cedar chest. I have a mental picture of the reindeer having a picnic, with my wine and dessert, on my tablecloth.
However, that doesn’t explain what happened to my missing underwear.
Merry Christmas, and I hope your holidays are less fraught with mystery than mine.

  1. Very interesting, Patricia. Did any of your Christmas decorations resemble any sort of wormish-holeish thing? And in a related question, did any new single wool socks or right gloves appear in your area? Because I have a strange overabundance of single socks and left gloves here.

  2. This made my day, Patricia! And like Beth, I have several single socks in my drawer, optimistically awaiting their partners.

    1. I know what you mean. I look at those lonely socks in my drawer and wonder how I could have lost their mates between the clothes dryer and the bedroom.

  3. If it's the reindeer they're busy, busy and sneaky. Stuff has a way of vanishing around my house, too. Have a happy holiday anyway. Maybe it'll all show up again one day.

  4. The secret is finally out. We all confront the mystery of the single sock. And I thought it was just me. So glad I don't need to hide my secret anymore. (It still doesn't explain where the go.)

  6. Ok, guys. I really want to know...just what does happen to socks? I have looked under the washer, between the washer and dryer, under the dresser, cleaned out drawers and I'm convinced there ARE gremlins, ghosts or invisible aliens, who all have cold feet. There is a possibility they are one legged, or possess one foot. Just because we can't see these creatures does not mean they don't exist. Right? So, the discussion is open. Merry Christmas to all!

    1. When you get to the Pearly Gate, St Peter is there. He will hand you a basket that has the mate to every sock you've lost! Tis true.

  7. Look under the sofa, ladies. I finally found a favorite sock there—weeks after I had thrown out its “single” mate. Which says something about my housekeeping. Sob. Good luck with those missing items, Patricia. I recently moved and now spend half my time looking for stuff. Did I pack something in an elusive box or downsize it? Who knows?
