It's January, and what, you might ask, is going on at the ranch? Nothing! It's so wonderful. My neighbors will start calving soon, which means that blizzards will come, but right now it's beautiful. We don't start calving until late March because we're weather wienies.
So here's what happened since I last checked in. We decorated for Christmas:
We had just enough snow for it to be pretty.
The antelope showed up. We have a small herd that winter with our cattle. Because the snow hasn't gotten too deep, the cattle are still on winter pasture, so we don't have to feed yet.
We put windows in my Mom's house using a tractor. The windows were really heavy and it was the only way we could get them up to where they belonged. Doesn't everyone install windows in Montana in December? The window guy didn't order them on time, so July installation didn't happen as planned.
The elk came down from the mountains. They stayed in our field for about a week, then moved to the neighbor's field. They can wreck havoc on hay stacks and winter forage, so we weren't sorry to see them go.
It got really pretty. That's my Festivus tree. We actually put that dead tree in our yard on purpose to allow the birds places to hang out until our real trees grow. I really like it.
I made a robe that's a really long hoodie sweatshirt and it's so cozi-licious!
The trumpeter swans are here now. They sometimes hang out in the potato field beside my house. I looked up "what do swans eat" and come to find out, they like to glean potatoes and lettuce from fields. So, I have spud eating swans next door every now and again.
And finally, we're getting some beautiful sunrises!
I hope all is well with you and thank you so much for stopping by my blog! If you'd like more information about me or my books, please check out my website or my Facebook page!
Cheers!

Reading your posts is like stepping into a magical world, Jeannie. The mountains, the fields, the elk and antelope...I’m sitting in my city house looking into my tiny backyard with small shed and wishing for some visual grandeur to escape this dreary winter day. So thanks for giving it to me! And cool hoodie robe...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Janice. I love writing about where I live.
DeleteSo beautiful, Jeannie. I can picture you in your cuddly robe, looking out the window at that sunrise. We spent the first six years of marriage in Wyoming, so seeing pronghorns always makes me nostalgic. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome, Beth!
DeleteThank you! I love your ranch pictures. I like the robe, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Liz!
DeleteAs someone who lives on the East Coast, I loved seeing these pictures of Montana: the sunrise, the elk, the snow. Thanks for sharing the pictures. And thanks for sharing the idea of that cuddly robe!
ReplyDeleteThe cuddly robe it the best, Tanya!
DeleteYou make me want to move to Montana...almost. It is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI so understand the almost, Patricia. There are some difficulties, but overall I'm glad I'm here!
DeleteOnce again, thanks for brightening my day with your wonderful photos. Swans in the snow--what a sight!
ReplyDeleteYou are so welcome, Virginia.
DeleteSo this is where the deer and the antelope roam. I always wondered where that was (hehe).
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is, Shirley. I didn't include the deer photos. They're more common than rabbits here. :)
DeleteA great description of a slice of American life. Thanks for the great pictures and I love the festivus tree.

ReplyDeleteI just love your photographs, Jeannie. I tend to pop by late, but I love hearing your ranch stories and seeing the photos! Just stunning.
