We Can't Gather Together

 By Shirley Hailstock

This time of year we all think of gathering together. It’s a time for reflection of the past year, what we did, what we wanted to do, and what we’re thankful for. Since we can’t really gather safely this Thanksgiving, I thought about all the memories of past family holidays I’ve been part of.

First, there’s the food. We used to spend nearly a day and a night cooking. I’ve even gotten up at three o’clock in the morning to put the turkey in the oven. At the table, after we said what we were thankful for and began our meal, we’d share past memories.

We all have them. Remember when Uncle John told his war stories. Uncle John was never in a war. The laughter would ring out. And everyone has a sister, cousin, relative who brings up your most embarrassing moment to reveal to everyone at the table. Thankfully, we can now laugh at those moments (maybe).

So while we may not be able to gather together, we are lucky to be able to see each other through the magic of electronics. Your smiles and love can be seen. If you’re traveling this year, be careful and safe. If you’re staying close to home also be safe. Bask in the shadow of good food and family love.

Wash your hands, wear your mask, and protect each other. Happy Thanksgiving.

Have a wonderful holiday.

  1. Happy (virtual) Thanksgiving, Shirley! This is a good reminder that despite not seeing loved ones for special holidays this year, we have memories of past ones for comfort.

  2. Thanks, Shirley. Your title reminded me of the old hymn "We Gather Together." That tune runs through my mind every time of year. Fortunately, we're all of one mind in my family, so we'll all stay home and connect in other ways. I'm looking forward to a peaceful day!

    1. It’s a song we sang as a prayer every Thanksgiving.

  3. I had to laugh about getting up so early to put the turkey in the oven--I've done that so many times. And because stuffing the bird the night before isn't recommended, there I am, sleep in my eyes, trying to stuff away. But I'd rather see my family in years to come, than risk never seeing them again for the holidays. We're doing a Zoom meeting with everyone in the morning. However, I'll still be cooking...

    1. I’m still cooking too. And I’m cooking a huge turkey. I’ll freeze it in serving sizes so it will take up less room in the freezer.
