by Editorial Assistant Evan Yeong
I thought long and hard
about how to frame my introduction to the Heartwarming Author Blog, which was
slightly complicated by the fact that I don’t have too many photos of me and my
life. As the deadline fast approached I realized that I could actually tackle
this post and feed myself and my
roommate, all in one fell swoop!
Technically I started
one day before Leah, which would make me the second newest addition to the
Harlequin Heartwarming team. I don’t have cats (allergic) or a novel in the
works (there’s a reason I’m on this
side of editorial), but what I do have is a love for cooking.
There’s nothing that
helps me to unwind after a long (but enjoyable) day at the office more than
pulling groceries out of the fridge and settling in to just-under-an-hour of
chopping, measuring, boiling, stir-frying, and more! Putting a meal together
never feels like work to me, and being able to enjoy the fruits of my labour is
an obvious plus. (Side note: I never worked at Starbucks, the apron was given
to me.)
These photos are of me
making last night’s dinner, kimchi-jjigae
(kimchi stew) which I made with homemade kimchi alongside some stir-fried bok
choy and carrots. And rice, of course, you can’t forget rice. I’m not Korean,
but I have found that Korean dishes are some of the easiest and most rewarding
to make (if you can find the ingredients, of course!).
My love for cooking can
be traced back to my dad, who was always (and continues to be) the best chef in
the house. He built up his own experience learning from his mom, working at his
uncle’s restaurant, and even a short stint at McDonald’s during his university
days! My goal is to be half the cook that he is, but I know I still have quite
a ways to go.
It’s been great reading
through the posts here and seeing that I’m not the only one with a love for
(both eating and making) food. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all
better in the coming months. Please let me know if you have any favourite
(vegetarian) recipes; I’d be excited to try them out!
I love to eat, and I love the idea of cooking so many interesting foods, but I'm an uninspired and mediocre cook on my best days! I enjoyed your post, and welcome to the blog!
ReplyDeleteDinner looks great! Welcome to Heartwarming.
ReplyDeleteWhat time did you say dinner would be ready? Looks great and welcome to the blog!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Evan:-) I enjoy cooking too but not every single night. In the winter, my cooking style becomes 'assembling' as I prep most dinners in my crock-pot. Welcome to Heartwarming!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Heartwarming and to the blog, Evan! I love to cook too, different foods from all over. Perhaps you’ll share some recipes sometime? Especially kimchee? :)
ReplyDeleteMy kimchi recipe actually came from a cookbook called "Cook Korean!: A Comic Book with Recipes". It's one of my favourites because author and illustrator Robin Ha draws every step for you to easily follow along.
DeleteLuckily she also shared the pages to her kimchi recipe on her tumblr!: https://banchancomic.tumblr.com/post/89685205764/kimchi-is-the-spicy-fermented-napa-cabbage-dish
Hope if you're making such yummy dinners your roommate takes over cleanup chores!
ReplyDeleteHaha, she typically does the dishes, so there's some distribution of labour!
DeleteI recently wrote post about cooking. I love doing it for big meals, but everyday cooking cuts into my writing time. I'd love to have a cook who does the work for me.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Heartwarming!
ReplyDeleteI love Korean food, but haven't ever tried making it. I'll have to give it a try. Welcome to Heartwarming
